The Primo Electric Charcoal Starter lights lump charcoal with a heating element instead of fluid, paper or a torch. You bury the element in the charcoal, plug it in, and it glows hot enough to set the lump immediately around it alight. Once that patch has caught, unplug it, pull it out, and rest it somewhere non-combustible while it cools — the fire spreads on its own from there.
It suits anyone who lights a fire often. There is nothing to run out of and nothing to restock, no petroleum smell drifting up out of the firebox, and no waiting for a fluid to burn off before food can go on. The one thing it does need is power within reach of where the grill lives, so it is a better fit for a grill that stays put on a patio than for one you carry to a campsite. Keep it dry, and give it a clear path down into the coals rather than forcing it between large chunks.

How does the Primo Electric Charcoal Starter work?
It is a heating element on a handle. You push it into the lump charcoal so it is surrounded on all sides, plug it into an outdoor-rated outlet, and the element heats until the charcoal touching it ignites. When you can see a patch of lit coals, unplug it and lift it out. The rest of the firebox catches from that patch as the fire spreads.
Do I still need firestarters if I have an electric starter?
No, they do the same job by different means, and most people use one or the other. Some keep a box of Primo Quick Lights Firestarters anyway for cooking away from a power outlet, or as a backup. The electric starter has no running cost; the firestarters need no electricity.
Will it work with any Primo ceramic charcoal grill?
Yes. It lights the charcoal rather than the grill, so it is not size-specific — it works the same way in the Oval Junior as it does in the Oval XX-Large, and in the All-In-One packages. Any cooker burning Primo 100% Natural Lump Charcoal can be lit with it, including the Round.
Do I leave it in the grill while the food is cooking?
No. Take it out as soon as the surrounding charcoal has caught, unplug it, and set it on a surface that will not scorch until it has cooled down. It is only there to start the fire. Leaving it buried in a firebox that is climbing towards cooking temperature is asking for damage to the element and the cord.
