Built-In Griddles

What is a built-in outdoor griddle?

A built-in outdoor griddle is a flat-top cooking appliance designed to be permanently installed into an outdoor kitchen island. Unlike a traditional grill with cooking grates, a griddle uses a solid steel or stainless steel cooking surface that's ideal for preparing a wide variety of foods. The TrueFlame 30" built-in gas griddle TFG30 and the Coyote 30" flat top griddle C3FTG30 are two common examples.

What can you cook on a built-in griddle?

Built-in griddles are incredibly versatile and can be used to cook:

• Breakfast foods like pancakes, eggs, bacon, and hash browns

• Smash burgers

• Cheesesteaks

• Fried rice

• Fajitas

• Stir fry

• Vegetables

• Seafood

• Quesadillas

• Grilled sandwiches

What's the difference between a built-in griddle and a built-in grill?

A built-in grill cooks over open flame using cooking grates, making it ideal for steaks, burgers, and foods that benefit from grill marks. A built-in griddle features a flat cooking surface that excels at cooking smaller foods, breakfast items, and dishes that require even heat without food falling through the grates.

Are built-in griddles fueled by propane or natural gas?

Many built-in griddles are available in both liquid propane (LP) and natural gas (NG) models. Some are electric instead — the Le Griddle Ranch Hand and the Le Griddle 16" electric griddle with lid GEE40 run on electricity and need a circuit rather than a gas line. It's important to purchase the version designed for your home's fuel supply or verify whether an approved conversion kit is available.

What size built-in griddle should I buy?

Popular built-in griddle sizes range from 30 to 40 inches. Smaller models such as the Le Griddle Pro Series 40 single-burner work well for everyday family meals, while larger griddles like the Pro Series 105 three-burner provide more cooking space for entertaining and preparing multiple foods at once. You can compare built-in griddles under $2,500 against premium built-in griddles above that tier to see how size and plate thickness track with price.

Do built-in griddles require an insulated jacket?

If you're installing a built-in griddle into a combustible island made from wood or other combustible materials, most manufacturers require an insulated jacket or liner. Jackets are model-specific — the TrueFlame liner for the TFG30 and the Coyote jacket for the 30" flat top griddle each fit only their own appliance. Browse all insulating liners and jackets. Masonry or other non-combustible installations may not require one. Always follow the manufacturer's installation guidelines.

How hot do outdoor built-in griddles get?

Most built-in gas griddles can reach temperatures well above 500°F, allowing you to sear burgers, caramelize vegetables, and cook a wide range of foods quickly and evenly.

What is the cooking surface made from?

Cooking surfaces vary by manufacturer but are commonly made from carbon steel, stainless steel, or polished steel. Plate thickness matters as much as material: Le Griddle publishes both a 3mm and a 6mm version of the same unit, such as the Pro Series 75 with a 3mm plate and the same model with a 6mm plate. Thicker plates hold heat better under a heavy load; thinner plates heat up faster. Each material and thickness offers different benefits in terms of heat retention, maintenance, and seasoning requirements.

Do built-in griddles need seasoning?

Many carbon steel griddles require seasoning before their first use and periodic maintenance afterward to develop a naturally non-stick cooking surface. Stainless steel cooking surfaces generally do not require seasoning.

How do I clean a built-in griddle?

While the cooking surface is still warm, scrape away food residue using a griddle scraper. Wipe the surface clean with paper towels or a soft cloth. For carbon steel griddles, apply a light coat of cooking oil after cleaning to help maintain the seasoning.

Can a built-in griddle replace a grill?

For some homeowners, yes. A griddle offers tremendous cooking versatility, but many outdoor kitchens include both a built-in grill and a built-in griddle to maximize cooking options for different types of meals.

Are built-in griddles good for entertaining?

Absolutely. Their large flat cooking surface makes it easy to prepare breakfast, burgers, stir fry, fajitas, and other meals for large groups while cooking everything at once. Wide commercial-style plates such as the Le Griddle Commercial 105 are built for exactly that kind of volume.

Do built-in griddles have grease management systems?

Most premium built-in griddles feature an integrated grease trough or removable grease collection tray that helps simplify cleanup during and after cooking.

Are built-in griddles worth the investment?

If you enjoy cooking breakfast outdoors, making smash burgers, stir fry, or entertaining guests, a built-in griddle can become one of the most frequently used appliances in an outdoor kitchen.

Can I install a built-in griddle next to a grill?

Yes. Many outdoor kitchen layouts include both a built-in grill and a built-in griddle to provide maximum cooking flexibility. Always follow the manufacturer's required installation clearances.

Do built-in griddles come with lids?

Many premium built-in griddles include a stainless steel lid or hinged cover. The lid's job is protection: closed over the plate, it shields the cooking surface from rain, sun, and debris when the appliance is not in use, and on models like the Bonfire Whistler built-in gas griddle CBBGD it also lets the griddle sit flush and closed in the island. If a griddle has no lid, use a fitted cover instead.

Does a built-in griddle need a vent hood?

That is a separate question from the lid, and it depends on where the griddle is installed. A vent hood does not protect the cooking surface — it removes smoke, steam, and airborne grease while you cook. Griddles produce a great deal of both, so if the appliance sits under a covered patio, pergola, pavilion, or any overhead structure, an outdoor vent hood is usually recommended and may be required by the manufacturer or local code. In a fully open-air island, a hood is typically not needed. Size the hood wider than the griddle and follow the hood manufacturer's CFM guidance.

How much maintenance does a built-in griddle require?

Routine maintenance includes cleaning the cooking surface after each use, emptying the grease tray, and periodically inspecting burners and gas connections. Carbon steel griddles also require occasional re-seasoning to maintain their protective coating.

Can you cook delicate foods on a built-in griddle?

Yes. The flat cooking surface is ideal for foods that are difficult to prepare on traditional grill grates, including eggs, pancakes, fish, shrimp, vegetables, diced meats, and small seafood items.

Can I add a griddle surface to a grill I already own?

Often, yes. A drop-in griddle plate sits over the existing cooking grates and gives you a flat-top zone without a second cutout in the island. It won't match a dedicated built-in griddle for capacity or heat control, but it is the least invasive way to add flat-top cooking.

What should I look for when buying a built-in griddle?

When comparing models, consider:

• Cooking surface size

• Fuel type (LP, NG, or electric)

• Number of burners

• BTU output

• Cooking surface material and plate thickness

• Grease management system

• Stainless steel construction

• Warranty coverage

• Required cutout dimensions

• Availability of an insulated jacket

Is a built-in griddle a good addition to an outdoor kitchen?

Yes. A built-in griddle adds exceptional versatility to an outdoor kitchen, allowing you to prepare everything from breakfast and lunch to dinner and appetizers. Whether used on its own or alongside a built-in grill, it's one of the most functional appliances for homeowners who love cooking outdoors.
