Primo Quick Lights Firestarters get lump charcoal going from a match, with no lighter fluid involved. Sit one down in among the pieces near the center of the firebox, light it, and leave the lid open and the bottom vent wide while it burns. Give it long enough to set the charcoal around it properly alight before you close the lid and start setting your vents for the cook you have in mind. This listing is the 24-count case.
The reason to keep a box near the grill is what a firestarter does not do. Lighter fluid soaks into porous lump and into the ceramic itself, and the smell has a way of turning up again in the first thing you cook. A firestarter burns out and is gone. How do I use Primo Quick Lights Firestarters?
Set one down inside the charcoal rather than on top of it, so lump is touching it on several sides, and light it with a match or a long lighter. Leave the lid open and the bottom vent fully open so it gets air. Once you can see the charcoal around it glowing and graying over, close the lid and set your vents for the temperature you are after.
How many firestarters do I need for one fire?
One placed in the middle of the firebox is usually enough, because the fire spreads outwards from wherever it starts. If you want a wide bed of coals lit quickly for a hot direct cook, light two or three spread across the charcoal instead. For a long low-and-slow cook, a single starter in one spot is the better choice, since you want the fire creeping rather than racing.
What is the difference between these and the electric charcoal starter?
These are consumable and need only a match, so they work anywhere, including well away from an outlet. The Primo Electric Charcoal Starter is reusable and costs nothing to run, but needs power within reach of the grill. Both light Primo 100% Natural Lump Charcoal without fluid, and plenty of people keep both.
Will a firestarter leave a taste in my food?
No, provided you let it finish burning before you put food on. There is no fluid to soak into the charcoal or into the ceramic, which is the usual source of an off taste in a kamado. Wait until the starter has burnt out and the charcoal around it has taken hold and grayed over, then close the lid and bring the grill up to temperature.
