This gasket is the dome seal for the Primo Oval Junior 200, the Primo Kamado and the G420. One part covers all three, so if you own any of them this is the listing. It seals the dome against the base, and everything a kamado does well at low temperatures depends on that joint being closed.

Gaskets wear out; that is normal, not a fault. The symptom is loss of control rather than an obvious failure. A grill that once sat quietly at a low temperature starts drifting up, overshoots when you are trying to bring it down, or refuses to respond to the vents the way it used to. On a firebox as compact as the Junior's there is less margin to absorb a leak, so the effect tends to be noticeable early.

The grill in the range this suits is the Primo Oval Junior ceramic charcoal grill, including the Primo Oval Junior All-In-One package. Since a slack dome is sometimes hardware rather than seal, the Primo Oval Junior hinge and handle kit is the companion part. More maintenance items sit in Primo grill accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this gasket fit my Primo Oval Junior?

Yes, this is the Junior 200 seal, and the same part is listed for the Primo Kamado and the G420. Larger Ovals do not share it. An Oval Large 300 or Oval X-Large 400 owner needs the Primo replacement gasket for the Oval X-Large 400 and Large 300, since the seal has to follow the rim of the grill it is fitted to.

What does the gasket actually do?

It seals the gap where the dome meets the base. A kamado works by controlling exactly how much air reaches the fire, which is only possible if the one route in is the vent you opened. When the seal goes, air arrives uninvited and the fire stops answering to the vents in any predictable way.

How do I know mine has gone?

Open the dome and look at the seal on both rims: flattened, thinning, torn or missing sections all count. Then look at behaviour. If a cook that used to hold steady now climbs on its own, or the dome no longer closes flush, the seal is the first thing to suspect rather than the charcoal or the weather.

Can I replace it myself?

Yes, it is a straightforward job on a cold grill. The work is mostly in the preparation: strip the old seal off, clean both rims back to bare, and make sure nothing is left that would hold the new one proud. Then lay it round the rim without pulling it tight and close the dome onto it.

Do the Kamado and G420 really use the same seal as the Junior?

That is how the part is listed: the Junior 200, the Kamado and the G420 are all covered by this one seal. If you own more than one of the three it is a single part to keep on the shelf instead of three, which is worth knowing when you are stocking up on the pieces that wear out.
