This hinge and handle kit fits the Primo Oval Junior, pre-2015 and post-2015 alike. That is genuinely useful: on the Large and the X-Large you have to know which era of grill you own before you can order hardware, and on the Junior you do not.
The kit is the hinge, the bands that wrap the ceramic dome and base, and the handle. The Junior is the Primo people move around most, and moving a kamado puts load through exactly these parts, since the handle and bands are what everybody grabs when the grill has to go somewhere. Hardware on a portable grill leads a harder life than hardware on one that never leaves the patio.
Change it when the dome stops closing properly, when the handle develops play, or when the bands no longer hold the shell firmly. A dome that rests unevenly against the base leaks, and on a small firebox a leak shows up quickly as a grill that will not settle at a low temperature.
Made for the Primo Oval Junior ceramic charcoal grill, including the Primo Oval Junior All-In-One package. While the bands are loose, the sealing rims are accessible, so it is a good time to fit the Primo replacement gasket for the Oval Junior 200. The wider parts list is in Primo grill accessories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The Junior is the one size where a single kit covers both generations, so you do not need to date your grill before ordering. That is not true further up the range: the Oval Large and Oval X-Large each have separate pre-2015 and post-2015 kits that will not fit the other era.
A hinge, a set of bands and a handle. The bands clamp around the ceramic dome and base, the hinge joins them so the dome can swing, and the handle is what you open it by. All three arrive together, which keeps the assembly the same age rather than mixing one new part with two worn ones.
No. It is sized to the Junior shell and nothing else. A Large owner needs one of the two era-specific Large kits, for instance the Post-2015 Oval Large hinge and handle kit, and has to know which generation their grill belongs to before buying. The Junior's single-kit convenience does not extend to the larger Ovals.
Check where the movement is coming from first. If the band the handle mounts to has loosened, tightening the handle alone will not hold for long. If the dome is also sitting off-centre or closing unevenly, the hardware as a whole has had enough and replacing the set is the more durable answer.
Use the handle to open the dome, not to pick the grill up. Lifting a loaded kamado by the lid is how people crack ceramic. Move a Junior by its cart or its stand, with the dome closed and latched down, and treat the handle as what you open the grill with rather than what you pick it up with.
No, but do it cold and do it with help. Once the bands are slack there is nothing holding the ceramic together, and even a Junior's dome is heavier and more awkward than it looks. Reassemble with everything loose, square the dome to the base, then tighten down.
