Primo Junior vs. Large vs. XL vs. XXL: Which Grill Size Should You Buy?
Choose a Primo size around the largest meal you regularly cook, the space available for the complete setup, and whether you want direct and indirect areas working at the same time. The bigger model gives you more room; it does not automatically make a better dinner.
Primo Oval Cooking Area Compared
| Model | Primary cooking area | Optional rack system adds | Total with full listed rack system |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval Junior | 210 sq. in. | 150 sq. in. | 360 sq. in. |
| Oval Large | 300 sq. in. | 195 sq. in. | 495 sq. in. |
| Oval X-Large | 400 sq. in. | 280 sq. in. | 680 sq. in. |
| Oval XX-Large | 500 sq. in. | 350 sq. in. | 850 sq. in. |
These are manufacturer-listed areas. Optional rack totals describe additional cooking levels, not a larger main grate. Confirm the rack combination and quantity required; one accessory rack does not necessarily supply the full optional system.
Who Should Consider the Oval Junior?
The Junior is worth considering for smaller everyday meals or a limited patio footprint. It retains the Oval layout without requiring you to buy the largest cooker. If the occasional large cook is the exception, decide whether an extra rack or cooking in batches is acceptable.
Check the actual food fit before choosing it for a whole brisket or large turkey. The name of the cut is not a measurement: two briskets can differ substantially in length and width.
When Does the Oval Large Make Sense?
The Large adds 90 square inches of main-grate area over the Junior. We would shortlist it when you want more room for a family meal and sides without immediately stepping up to the XL footprint. Think about the space left after adding a pan or reserving part of the surface for indirect cooking.
Why Step Up to an Oval XL?
The XL gives you 100 more square inches than the Large on the primary grate. It is a useful model to compare when you host regularly, want more separation between foods, or expect longer cuts to feature in your cooking. Measure the cuts and pans you use against the grate dimensions before ordering.
Who Needs an Oval XXL?
The XXL is the largest of these four Oval models, with 500 square inches on the main grate. Consider it when batch cooking and larger gatherings are routine. Measure the complete cart or table and leave the clearances required by the installation instructions.
Choose XXL accessories explicitly listed for this size. An XL deflector or divider is not the XXL part.
Will Ribs, Brisket, or a Turkey Fit?
Use three measurements: food length, food width, and height with any roasting rack or pan. Compare them with the usable grate and closed-dome space. An extension rack adds capacity but can reduce vertical room available above another item. A rib rack changes how ribs are arranged; it does not enlarge the grill.
Should I Buy a Bigger Grill and Use Less Charcoal?
A compatible firebox divider supports smaller cooks on part of the firebox. That can make a larger Oval more flexible, but does not remove the cost or footprint of the bigger cooker. Buy for your normal cooking needs plus a realistic allowance for hosting.
