The Primo Oval Large Ceramic Charcoal Grill sold here is the grill head alone — no stand, no side shelves, no tools. This is the listing for anyone who has already decided where the grill will live, whether that is a cypress countertop table, a cradle, a rolling cart base or an opening in a masonry island.

Head-first is the sensible order for a built-in. The surround dictates counter height, storage and finish, and none of those are things a bundled stand lets you choose. It also means you are not paying for a base you will store in the garage. What you do have to plan for is access to the ash door and enough clearance behind the grill for the dome to open.

The Oval Large sits in the middle of the Primo range and is a comfortable size to cook on daily. Its long firebox lets you keep coals at one end and food at the other, and a cast iron firebox divider makes that split permanent if you cook two-zone most of the time.

  • Grill head only — stand, side shelves, ash tool and grate lifter not included
  • Fits Oval Large tables, cradles, cart bases and island tops
  • Shares several multi-size accessories with the Oval X-Large
  • Ceramic charcoal cooker for direct grilling, indirect roasting and smoking

Prefer it freestanding? The Primo Oval Large All-In-One package includes the stand, shelves and tools. For a surround, look at the Primo cypress countertop table for the Oval Large, the Primo cradle and side tables for the Oval Large, or the Primo cart base with basket and stainless steel side shelves. Parts and add-ons are in Primo grill accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a stand included with the Oval Large grill head?

No. You are buying the ceramic cooker on its own, without the base and tools that come in the All-In-One version of the same grill. It needs a cradle, a cart base, a cypress table, an island top or a built-in counter to sit in, and those are bought separately.

What should I put the Oval Large in?

Depends how you cook. A cradle with side tables is the compact option. A cart base with basket rolls and stores charcoal underneath. A cypress countertop table gives you real work surface. A two-piece island top listed for the X-Large and Large builds it into a counter. All of them are size-specific.

Can I fit the Oval Large into an existing outdoor kitchen?

Yes, that is what the head-only listing is for. Cut the opening to the grill rather than to a guess, allow room behind for the dome to swing up, and keep the ash door reachable. Primo's ceramic feet for built-in applications are the accessory that usually gets ordered late.

Does the Oval Large take the same parts as the Oval Junior?

Not the firebox parts. Deflector plates, searing grates, cast iron griddles, extension racks and rotisserie kits are made per size. Some racks and baking stones are listed for X-Large, Large, Junior and Round together, and those cover both grills — check for the size list in the accessory title.

What do heat deflectors and a drip pan actually do?

Deflectors block the fire's line of sight to the food so heat arrives by convection, which is how you roast and smoke rather than grill. A drip pan above them catches rendering fat before it reaches the coals. The Primo heat deflector rack for the Oval Large is what carries either one.

Can I run a rotisserie on the Oval Large?

Yes. The Primo Oval Large rotisserie kit is the size-matched version, and it turns the grill into a spit roaster for whole birds and larger cuts. Rotisserie baskets and kebab holders ride on the same spit, so one kit opens up several ways of cooking.

How long does a load of charcoal last?

Longer than most people expect, because you burn only what the vents allow. Light a full firebox in one spot for a low cook and the fire creeps outward slowly. When you are finished, close both vents, smother the fire, and the unburnt lump is still usable next time.

Does it need seasoning before the first cook?

No seasoning, but a gentle first fire is wise. Bring it up slowly rather than driving it hot straight away, and give it a couple of moderate cooks before you run it flat out. After that, the routine is simply clearing ash and keeping the vents clean.
