This listing is the Primo Oval X-Large Ceramic Charcoal Grill as a head only: the ceramic cooker, without the stand, side shelves or tools that come in the All-In-One package. Buy it this way when you already know where the grill is going — a cypress table, an island top, a cart base, or an opening cut into an outdoor kitchen counter.
The X-Large is the most commonly built-in Primo size, and it is the one with the most surrounds designed for it. Primo lists a full cypress table and a countertop table in this size, a two-piece island top, and cart bases with and without stainless steel side shelves, so you can pick the look and the working height rather than accepting whatever the grill came bolted to.
As a cooker, this is a charcoal grill that will also roast and smoke. Load lump charcoal, light one spot rather than the whole bed, and steer the temperature with the two vents. Add deflector plates and the fire stops radiating straight at the food, which is the switch between grilling a steak and holding a shoulder at low heat for twelve hours.
If you want it freestanding out of the box, buy the Primo Oval X-Large All-In-One package instead. For a surround, look at the Primo cypress table for the Oval X-Large, or the Primo 2-piece island top for the Oval X-Large and Large, which is built to sit on the Primo cart base with basket for the Oval X-Large and Large. More grills are in Primo grills.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. This listing is the ceramic grill body on its own. It has to be supported by something you buy separately — a cradle, a cart base, a cypress table, an island top or a built-in counter. If you would rather it arrived standing on its own legs, the All-In-One package of the same grill is the listing for that.
More options than any other Primo size. Primo makes a full cypress table and a cypress countertop table for the X-Large, a two-piece island top that mounts on the cart base with basket, cart bases with and without stainless side shelves, and a cradle with side tables. Masonry islands are also common.
They are both the Oval X-Large. The Jack Daniel's Edition of the Oval X-Large is Primo's special edition of this same size and it is listed separately here. Because the size is the same, X-Large accessories are what you shop for either way.
Primo sells a four-piece set of ceramic feet listed for built-in applications, and it is the part most people discover they need after the counter is already cut. Sort it out while you are planning the opening rather than afterwards, along with how you will reach the ash door.
Heat deflector plates. Drop Primo heat deflector plates for the Oval X-Large in below the grate and the fire can no longer see the food, so heat arrives by convection instead of radiation. Add a drip pan above them and you catch fat before it hits the coals.
Because a long, straight fire bed is easier to divide than a circular one. Coals at one end and nothing at the other gives you a hot zone and a cool zone that stay separate, which is awkward to arrange in a round kamado where everything sits the same distance from the middle.
Fill the firebox and light it in one spot rather than several. Lump charcoal burns across from the lit area gradually, so a full box lit at one point will run for a long stretch at low temperature, and whatever does not burn is still there for the next cook once you shut the vents.
The one cut for a grill in a table, not the one for a grill in a cart. Primo lists covers by installation, including a cover for the Oval X-Large in a cypress table and separate versions for cart-mounted and island-top setups, so match the cover to your surround as well as your grill size.
Yes. The head is the same grill whichever surround it sits in, so a grill that starts life in a cradle can be lifted into a table or an island opening later. Plan for the weight and a second pair of hands — ceramic cookers are heavy and awkward rather than difficult.
