The Primo Oval XX-Large Ceramic Charcoal Grill - All-In-One Package is the largest of the five Primo Oval sizes, sold as a complete freestanding cooker rather than as a bare grill head. Along with the ceramic grill itself you get the heavy-duty stand it rolls on, side shelves on either side, an ash tool and a grate lifter.

The oval firebox is the reason people pick a Primo over a round kamado. Instead of a circle of coals under a circle of grate, you get a long cooking bed running end to end, which makes two-zone work the natural way to cook: bank the lump charcoal at one end, leave the far end bare, and you have direct heat and indirect heat side by side without rebuilding the fire in between.

What the package covers is the grill and the hardware around it, not the fuel or the fire management. Lump charcoal, a firestarter and something to read temperature with are all bought separately, and if low-and-slow cooking is the point of buying an XX-Large, add the deflector plates at the same time — they sit between the fire and the food and turn the grill from a direct-heat cooker into an oven.

  • Includes the heavy-duty stand, side shelves, ash tool and grate lifter — the difference between this and the head-only listing
  • Freestanding on its own base, so it does not need a table, cradle or island built around it
  • Takes XX-Large Primo accessories only — deflectors, grates, griddles and pizza ovens are cut to the firebox they sit in
  • Ceramic charcoal cooking, controlled by airflow rather than a burner dial

If you already have a table or island waiting for it, the Primo Oval XX-Large grill head on its own is the listing you want instead. To set this one up for long cooks, start with the Primo heat deflector plates for the Oval XX-Large and a supply of Primo natural lump charcoal. The Primo Oval XX-Large rotisserie kit is the usual next addition, and the rest of the range lives in Primo grill accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes with the Primo Oval XX-Large All-In-One package?

You get the XX-Large ceramic grill plus the heavy-duty stand, side shelves, an ash tool and a grate lifter. That covers the cooker, the base it stands on, work surfaces on both sides, and the two tools you reach for constantly — one for clearing spent ash, one for lifting a hot grate out of the way.

How is this different from the Oval XX-Large grill head on its own?

Same ceramic cooker, different starting point. The All-In-One arrives with everything it needs to stand up and be used. The head-only Oval XX-Large is the grill body alone, meant to drop into a cypress table, a cart base or a built-in island you supply. Buy this one if you want it freestanding.

Do I need to buy anything else before the first cook?

Fuel and fire-starting. The package has no charcoal or firestarters in it, so those come separately. Most owners also add heat deflector plates early on, because that is what converts the XX-Large from a hot direct grill into something that will hold a low steady temperature overnight for brisket or pork shoulder.

Will Oval X-Large accessories fit the XX-Large?

No. Primo parts are cut to one firebox, and an X-Large deflector, searing grate or griddle will not seat correctly in an XX-Large. Whenever you shop for this grill, look for XX-Large in the accessory title — that single word is the most common thing people get wrong when ordering.

Is the XX-Large too much grill for weeknight cooking?

Not really, because you light only what the cook needs. A ceramic charcoal grill does not have to be filled to be used: a small bed of lump at one end of the firebox will handle a couple of steaks, and the same grill takes a full load when you are cooking for a party.

Can I run two temperature zones at once?

Yes, and it is the standard way to use one. Push the lit coals to one end of the firebox and leave the other end empty, and you get a searing zone and a gentler holding zone in the same cooking chamber. A cast iron firebox divider for the XX-Large keeps that split tidy if you want a hard line between the two.

Does a cover come with it?

No, covers are sold separately and they are cut to the grill and its base together. For an XX-Large sitting on its All-In-One stand, look at the Primo grill cover for the Oval X-Large and XX-Large All-In-One rather than a cover made for a table or island install.

Can I cook pizza on it?

Yes. Any ceramic charcoal grill will bake once you get indirect heat under the food, and Primo makes a pizza oven insert sized for the Oval XX-Large that turns the dome into a proper baking chamber with a front opening. Without the insert, deflector plates and a baking stone still get you there.

How do I control the temperature?

With airflow. On a ceramic charcoal grill the bottom vent feeds the fire and the top vent controls how hard it draws, so you creep up on your target rather than overshooting and trying to come back down. Give the grill a few minutes to settle after each adjustment before you touch it again.
