Buying a Grill as a Christmas Gift (2026)

Checked 30 September 2026.

A grill can be a great Christmas gift, but it is a bigger purchase than it looks: it has to suit the fuel at the house, fit the space it will live in, and arrive in time. This guide covers what to decide and what to find out quietly before you buy, so the gift gets used rather than returned.

Can I buy a built-in grill as a Christmas gift?

Yes, if the outdoor kitchen already exists or is being planned, and you know the exact opening. A built-in grill drops into an island opening cut for that model, and openings differ by several inches between brands at the same nominal size. If you are replacing their current built-in grill, get its model number or measure the opening, then use the replacement grill finder. If there is no island yet, a built-in grill is not a surprise gift; it is the start of a project the household will want to plan.

Freestanding or built-in?

Freestanding (cart) grill Built-in grill
Where it goes On a patio or deck, on its own cart In an island opening cut for the model
Ready to use Once assembled and connected to fuel After the island, gas (and often power) are ready
Extra parts A cover for the cart version Insulating liner or jacket in a combustible island, plus a cover
Good surprise gift? Yes, if the fuel is right Only as a replacement with a known opening

Many cart grills use the same grill head as the built-in model, so choosing a cart does not usually mean a lesser grill. See the freestanding picks in the Holiday Grill Gift Guide 2026 and all cart grills.

Propane or natural gas?

Each grill is sold as a propane or a natural gas version, and they are not interchangeable without a conversion. Most manufacturers require conversions to be done by a qualified technician.

  • Propane runs from a propane cylinder, so it works anywhere the grill can safely stand. Check the product page for whether a cylinder is included; plan on buying one if not.
  • Natural gas needs a natural gas supply line at the spot where the grill will sit. If there is no line there now, a natural gas grill is not a gift they can use on Christmas Day.

If you are not sure which they have, look for a gas line and shut-off valve where their current grill sits, or a propane cylinder under it. More in natural gas vs propane.

Space and placement

Every grill has minimum clearances to walls, railings and anything combustible, and they vary a great deal by brand and model, so check the installation manual for the exact model. A grill under a roof, overhang or pergola needs a hood sized to it; see the ventilation guide. Measure the space where it will stand, allowing room for the side shelves and for the lid to open fully.

Assembly and delivery

  • Assembly. Cart grills are large and heavy. Ask us what assembly the model you choose involves before you plan to hide it in a closet.
  • Shipping. Free to the contiguous United States. Per our shipping policy, in-stock orders ship within one business day once payment is processed, with tracking emailed within 24 hours of dispatch.
  • How it arrives. Large items may ship differently from small accessories. Ask us how the specific grill ships and what delivery involves, so someone is home to receive it.
  • Timing. We do not publish Christmas cutoff dates, because delivery time depends on the product and where it ships from. If it must arrive before a certain day, call 843-212-7209 before you order and we will give you a current estimate.

What to confirm before buying a surprise grill

  1. Which fuel their home supports: propane, or a natural gas line at the grill spot.
  2. Where the grill will stand, and that it fits with the manufacturer's clearances.
  3. Whether it replaces a built-in grill; if so, the old model number or the opening size.
  4. Who will assemble it and connect it to fuel.
  5. That delivery works with your timing and that someone can receive it.
  6. The return policy, in case the gift needs to change.

Not sure about a whole grill?

If they already own a grill they like, an accessory made for it is easier to get right: see gifts for someone who already owns a grill. And if you are comparing holiday prices, the Black Friday grill buying guide shows how to compare complete setups.

Frequently asked questions

Is a grill a good Christmas gift?

Yes, when it matches the fuel at the house and the space it will live in. A freestanding grill on a cart is the easiest to give as a surprise.

Can I give a natural gas grill if they use propane now?

Only if a natural gas line will be available at the grill location. Otherwise buy the propane version.

Will it arrive by Christmas?

It depends on the product and where it ships from. Call us before ordering and we will give you a current estimate; we do not promise dates we cannot confirm.

Ask us before you buy
