Can You Reuse an Insulating Liner When Replacing a Grill?

Reuse an existing grill liner only after confirming that it is approved for the replacement grill, remains serviceable and can meet the replacement appliance's installation requirements. Similar width or a grill that physically slides into the jacket is not enough to establish an approved match.

Identify what is already in the island

Find the old grill label and the jacket label. Save clear photos, the original order if available and any installation paperwork. Record whether the enclosure opening was made for the grill alone or for a separate insulating jacket. These details can change which replacements are practical.

If the jacket has no readable identification, ask the manufacturer or dealer for help from photos and documentation. Measuring it can assist identification, but dimensions alone do not prove its original part number or approval.

Four checks before keeping the jacket

  1. Approved pairing: confirm the replacement model is named for that jacket or obtain model-specific manufacturer confirmation.
  2. Condition: have the installer inspect corrosion, deformation, damaged seams, missing parts and support. Appearance from above is not a complete condition check.
  3. Installation: compare the replacement manual with the existing enclosure, support, service access and surrounding surfaces.
  4. Opening: verify the finished dimensions and the actual jacket configuration before scheduling the replacement.

A same-brand upgrade can still require a different liner

Summerset lists GL-SZR32 for 32-inch Sizzler / Sizzler Pro grills and a separate GL-TRLPRO32 for the 32-inch TRL Pro. The shared brand and 32-inch label do not make the two jacket families interchangeable. Use the full model name when asking about an upgrade.

Separate an insulating jacket from an adapter

A fabricated support or trim piece may position an appliance or close a visible gap. It is not automatically an approved insulating liner. If the enclosure requires an approved jacket, keep that requirement in the project scope when discussing retrofit supports.

For an opening that needs to change, read the liner cutout planning guide. For a jacket purchase, use the compatibility guide.

What to send for a replacement shortlist

  • Old grill brand, full model and fuel type.
  • Existing jacket model or photos of its label.
  • Finished opening width, depth and height, with photos.
  • Island construction and countertop material.
  • Budget and whether countertop or cabinet changes are acceptable.

Replacement FAQs

Can I keep the liner if I switch brands?

Do not assume cross-brand approval. Confirm the exact pairing before choosing the replacement.

Should I remove the liner to make a larger grill fit?

First establish whether the planned installation requires a liner. Removing a required component to gain space is not a fit solution.

Is a new liner always required?

No automatic answer applies to every project. Approved compatibility, condition and installation requirements decide whether reuse is practical.
