Do You Need an Insulating Grill Liner? Combustible Construction Explained

An insulating grill liner — also sold as an insulated jacket — is generally required when a built-in grill is installed in an island built from combustible materials such as wood framing and some composites, and is generally not required when the island is fully non-combustible masonry. That is the general pattern, not the rule that governs your installation. The governing authority is always the specific grill’s installation manual and your local code, enforced by a licensed professional — never a general rule found on a website, including this one. Liners are also model-specific: a jacket is engineered for one grill or a named group of models, and one liner is not a substitute for another.

What a liner is and what it does

An insulating liner is a stainless steel enclosure that the grill head drops into, sized to that specific grill. It sits between the appliance and the island structure. Manufacturers supply them as the sanctioned method of installing their grill into an island that is not fully non-combustible.

Because the liner is part of how the manufacturer specifies the installation, the manual is the document that tells you whether you need one, which part number is correct, and what clearances apply. We are a retailer and an authorised dealer; we can tell you which liner the manufacturer lists for which grill and what it costs. We cannot tell you what your installation requires, and we will not print a clearance distance or a code requirement. Ask the manual, your local authority having jurisdiction, and a licensed installer.

Combustible versus non-combustible construction

Combustible construction generally means an island framed in wood, or in materials that will burn or degrade under sustained heat — including a number of composite and panel systems sold for outdoor kitchens. Non-combustible generally means block, brick, poured concrete or a steel frame with non-combustible sheathing.

Two cautions before you conclude yours is non-combustible. First, an island can be non-combustible in its structure and still contain combustible elements near the grill — furring strips, adhesives, a wooden face frame, a nearby cabinet. Second, some manufacturers call for a liner regardless of island material in certain configurations. Both questions are answered by the installation manual for your exact model, and by your local code. If you are not certain, buy the liner or get a professional opinion before the island is closed up.

Matching the liner to your grill

Alfresco

Four sizes, each titled for combustible construction: AIJ-30-01 at $829 for 30" grills and griddles, AIJ-36-01 at $869, AIJ-42-01 at $905 and AIJ-56 at $979. Alfresco states its grills are made and manufactured in the USA.

American Made Grills

The largest liner range we carry, and the one that most rewards care, because AMG series do not share jackets. The Hybrid 54 liner at $1,400.53 is the most expensive liner we stock. The Hybrid 36 is $1,167.11 and the Hybrid 42 is $1,283. Alturi and Estate share pricing at each size — Alturi 36 at $891.25 and Estate 36 GL-36 at $891 — but they are different parts. American Made Grills manufactures in the USA.

American Outdoor Grills

Three liners, each covering both L-Series and T-Series at that width: 24-IL-C at $1,120, 30-IL-C at $1,181 and 36-IL-C at $1,268. AOG grills are engineered, fabricated and assembled in the USA.

Coyote

The broadest coverage by appliance type. Grills: 30" C and SL at $719, 34" C-Series at $789, 36" CL and SL at $799, 42" CL and SL at $929 and the 50" Hybrid or Combo at $929. Pellet grills have their own: 28" at $789 and 36" at $929. Note there is no jacket listed for the 36" charcoal C3CH36; if you are putting that head into a combustible island, take the question to the manufacturer before ordering.

RCS

Premier and Cutlass are separate families. Premier 26 $649, Premier 32 $789, Premier 40 $799. On the Cutlass side, single liners cover both Pro and Elite at a given width: 30" $799, 38" $959, and Cutlass Pro 42 $979.

Summerset

Five grill liners: Sizzler 25 $749, 32" GL-SZR32 $799, 32" TRL and TRL Pro $799, TRL Pro 40 $929 and Resort 30 GL-SBG30 $879. The 32-inch Sizzler and 32-inch TRL liners are different parts at the same price; ordering by size alone is not enough. There is no liner listed for the 40-inch Sizzler or Sizzler Pro. TrueFlame

Le Griddle

Griddle liners only, in three sizes: 16" Wee $659, GFE75 group $769 and GFE105 group $944. Le Griddle products have been US-made in Texas since 2023.

Brands with no liner in our range

We do not currently list insulating liners for Sunstone, Memphis, Artisan or Bonfire grills. That is a statement about our catalogue, not about those grills’ installation requirements. Liners are not just for grills

Any gas appliance dropped into an island raises the same question. We stock insulating liners for built-in griddles — the Coyote 30" flat top jacket at $719 and the TrueFlame TFG30 liner at $759 — and for side burners and power burners across most brands. The Coyote single side burner jacket at $439 is the least expensive liner we sell; the Summerset PB2PRO power burner liner is $599 and the RCS Premier double side burner liner is $604.

If you are specifying an island with a grill, a griddle and a power burner, you are potentially specifying three liners, and together they can add well over $1,500 to the appliance budget. What happens if you skip one

If the installation manual calls for a liner and you do not fit one, you have installed the appliance outside the manufacturer’s instructions. The consequences are cumulative rather than dramatic, and all of them are bad: the installation may fail inspection; the manufacturer may decline a warranty claim on the grill or on damage to the surrounding structure; a home insurer may take the same view after an incident; and sustained heat against combustible material is a fire risk that a manual exists to manage.

Retrofitting is the expensive part. A liner drops in before the grill and often before the countertop. Adding one to a finished masonry island can mean cutting the opening and re-finishing the surround. Buying the liner with the grill is cheaper than buying it later, every time.

We are not in a position to tell you your specific installation is safe or unsafe. Get the manual, read the installation section, and have a licensed professional confirm it against local code before anything is built.

What actually matters

Order the liner by model, never by width. A 32-inch Summerset Sizzler and a 32-inch Summerset TRL take different parts. So do an AMG Alturi 36 and an AMG Estate 36.

Decide before the island is framed. The liner changes the effective opening, so its dimensions belong in the plan alongside the grill’s. Cross-check with built-in grill cutout dimensions, and if you are working from an existing opening, the replacement grill cutout finder.

Confirm liner availability before you commit to the grill. If your island is combustible and your preferred head has no listed liner, that is a reason to choose a different head.

FAQ

Do I need a liner in a masonry island?

Generally not, if the island is fully non-combustible. But some manufacturers call for a liner in configurations that have nothing to do with island material, and only your grill’s installation manual and local code settle it.

Is an insulated jacket the same thing as an insulating liner?

The terms are used interchangeably across brands. Alfresco and Coyote say "insulated jacket"; American Made Grills, AOG, RCS, Summerset and TrueFlame say "insulating liner" or "liner jacket". Order the part the manufacturer lists for your model.

Can I use a liner from another brand if the dimensions look close?

No. Liners are engineered for a specific grill or named group of models, and substituting one puts you outside the manufacturer’s instructions.

How much should I budget?

Across our range, liners run from $439 for a single side burner jacket to $1,400.53 for the AMG Hybrid 54. Grill liners cluster between roughly $650 and $1,300.

Do liners exist for pellet grills?

Get your grill’s installation manual before you buy anything, read the installation section, and have a licensed professional confirm it against your local code. If your island is or may be combustible, budget for the correct model-specific liner from the outset and order it with the grill. If your island is fully non-combustible masonry and the manual does not call for one, you can reasonably skip it — but confirm that with the manual and your installer rather than with a website.
