Planning a new outdoor kitchen

For a new build, the grill should be chosen before the island opening is finalised. The opening is set by the grill's published cutout — and by the liner, where one is used — not by the grill's nominal size.

  • Choose the grill first. Compare models by budget, how you cook, fuel type and the space available, then build the opening to the chosen model. If a 42-inch head is on your list, every 42-inch built-in compared is a useful starting point.
  • Use the manufacturer's cutout, clearances and liner requirements. These come from the installation manual or spec sheet for the exact model, and they change between series of the same width.
  • Allow for the liner. An insulated liner or jacket can need a larger opening than the grill on its own. Coyote, for example, lists a 32½" W × 20½" D × 10¼" H cutout for its 36-inch CL- and SL-Series grills, but its 36-inch insulated jacket calls for 35¾" W × 22⅛" D × 11" H. Coyote's manual requires a jacket when the grill is within 24 inches of combustible material below the countertop.   • Give your contractor the right documents. Once you have a shortlist, we can send the installation information we have for each model so your builder works from the manufacturer's figures rather than an estimate.

Replacing an existing built-in grill

A replacement starts with the opening you already have. The question is not "what size was the old grill?" but "which current grills publish a cutout that works with this opening?"

  • Identify the existing grill if you can — brand and model number help us check what the original opening was built for.
  • Measure the opening, not the grill. Width, depth and height of the cutout itself (guidance below).
  • Compare manufacturer cutouts, not nominal widths. A "32-inch grill" is not a standard replacement size. Brands name grills by overall width, cooking-surface width or a series number, and the openings differ.
  • Check more than width. Two grills can share a width and still need different depths or heights. Within Summerset's own range, the Sizzler and Sizzler Pro share an 8-inch cutout height while the TRL Pro needs 9⅜ inches.

What else can differ on a replacement

  • Depth — a deeper head may hit the back wall of the island or a rear obstruction.
  • Height — the space below the countertop has to clear the firebox and any liner.
  • Flange support — many built-in grills hang from their side flanges on the countertop around the opening, so an opening cut too wide leaves the grill unsupported.
  • Lid clearance — a taller hood or a backsplash, wall or vent hood behind the grill can stop the lid opening fully.
  • Fuel and electrical connections — the gas inlet position and type, the fuel itself, and whether the new model needs a power outlet for lights, ignition or a rotisserie.

If nothing fits exactly

Sometimes no current model matches an existing opening. The usual options are enlarging the countertop cutout, adding supports, using filler panels, or having a professionally designed adapter made. Each of these is work for a qualified fabricator or installer, and each should be checked against the new grill's installation instructions. We will tell you when a shortlist depends on one of them. We will not describe a grill as a drop-in fit on the strength of a width figure or a photograph.

Where a manufacturer has not published a figure we need, or its documents disagree, we say so rather than fill the gap with an estimate. Final measurements, structural support, gas and electrical requirements and the installation itself must be confirmed by a qualified installer against the manufacturer's current instructions.

How to measure an existing opening

  1. Width: measure the cutout from side to side at the front and again at the back. Note the smaller figure.
  2. Depth: measure from the front edge of the cutout to the back edge.
  3. Height: measure from the top of the countertop down to the first thing below that a grill would sit on or hit — a deck, shelf, framing or the floor of the island.
  4. Units: write down inches or centimetres, and round to the nearest ⅛ inch rather than to a whole number.
  5. Photos: take a straight-on photo of the grill, one of the opening edges and countertop, and one of the gas connection area through the access door if it is visible without moving anything.

Do not disconnect the gas supply or lift out an installed grill to measure. If the grill is still in place, send what you can see — the model number and photos are often enough to start, and an installer can confirm the opening when the old grill comes out.

FAQ

Can I replace my grill without cutting my countertop?

Sometimes. It works when a current model's published cutout matches your measured opening closely enough in width, depth and height, and its side flanges still rest on the countertop around the opening. If the opening is slightly too large, the fix is usually trim, supports or a filler detail; if it is too small in any dimension, the countertop or island has to be cut. We compare your measurements with each manufacturer's published cutout and tell you which case you are in. We never call a grill a drop-in fit from a width figure alone, and your installer confirms the fit on site.

Can you tell me whether a grill will fit my existing opening?

We can compare your measurements with the manufacturer's published cutout for each model and tell you where it looks workable, where it does not, and what is still unknown. We cannot guarantee a fit from measurements or photos; an installer has to confirm it on site against the installation instructions.

Why does a liner change the opening?

The liner sits between the grill and the island, so the island opening is built to the liner's dimensions rather than the grill's. Coyote's 36-inch jacket, for example, calls for a wider, deeper and taller opening than the 36-inch grill alone.

My old grill was 32 inches. Will any 32-inch grill fit?

Not necessarily. Nominal sizes are not standardised across brands, and grills of the same nominal width can need different cutout widths, depths and heights. Start from the measured opening.

Do you install grills or modify countertops?

No. We help with product selection and fit questions. Installation, gas and electrical work, countertop cutting and fabrication should be done by qualified local professionals.

What if I don't know my measurements yet?

That is normal for a new build. Tell us your budget, fuel and how you cook, and we will start with the shortlist; the opening is then built to the model you choose.
