Wood-Framed Outdoor Kitchens: Grill Liner Planning Checklist

For a wood-framed outdoor kitchen, select the grill and its approved insulating jacket before the island opening is built. A stone countertop or masonry-looking finish does not establish that the structure surrounding the appliance is non-combustible. The exact appliance instructions govern the permitted enclosure.

Evaluate the complete enclosure

Give the installer a description of the framing, sheathing, countertop, cabinet fronts and any nearby combustible components. Looking only at the finished surface can miss the construction beneath it. If an island supplier describes a system as suitable for outdoor kitchens, still check that its specified appliance configuration meets the grill manufacturer's instructions.

RCS explicitly states that its Premier RJC32A requires an insulating liner in a combustible cabinet. That product-specific notice is a reason to coordinate the appliance and enclosure together. It does not establish the requirements for every other grill.

Choose the appliance and jacket as a pair

Start with the full grill model and approved jacket number. For RCS Premier RJC32A / RJC32AL, our catalog lists LJRJC32. For Summerset Sizzler / Sizzler Pro 32-inch models, compare GL-SZR32. These are different jacket families. Use the compatibility guide to organize your selection.

Send these documents before fabrication

  1. The grill model and current installation manual.
  2. The approved jacket number and jacket installation drawing.
  3. The countertop and cabinet system specifications.
  4. A layout showing adjacent appliances and planned service access.
  5. The fuel configuration and requirements for any electrical connections.

Ask the contractor to identify the specified finished opening and support arrangement on the drawings. Finalize the pair before the countertop is templated. A required jacket can change the opening and available cabinet space.

A liner is one part of the installation

Confirm the manufacturer's remaining requirements for ventilation, combustible clearances, countertop materials and service access. An insulating jacket does not by itself answer every enclosure question. A cooking hood and gas-enclosure ventilation also serve different purposes; coordinate each requirement separately.

Include other cooking appliances

Review the side burner, power burner or griddle individually. A jacket for the main grill does not protect another appliance's opening. See the burner liner and accessory guide for selected model matches and equipment budget examples.

Construction planning FAQs

Does a granite countertop eliminate the need for a liner?

The countertop alone does not establish the construction around and beneath the grill. Check the whole installation against the manual.

Can cement board substitute for the approved liner?

Do not assume a material change replaces the manufacturer's specified jacket. Have the installer confirm the permitted assembly.

When should the jacket be ordered?

Confirm and include any required jacket with the equipment selection before fabrication. Coordinate delivery with the contractor's verification and construction schedule.
