The Primo Extension Rack for the Oval Large gives the grill a second working level above the main grate. One fire, two tiers of food, and no change to the grill itself.
The case for it is strongest on a long cook. When ribs, pork or chicken are going to sit for hours, doubling the levels doubles what that fire is producing for the same charcoal and the same attention. It is also what saves a cookout when the main grate is occupied by something that covers it completely, since the upper tier stays free. Sitting higher above the coals, that upper level is the gentler of the two on a direct fire, which suits food that is finishing or being held rather than searing.
It is cut for the Primo Oval Large ceramic charcoal grill and no other size. Does this extension rack fit the Primo Oval Large?
Yes, the Oval Large is the grill it is built for. Primo sizes its extension racks to individual models rather than making one that spans the range, so check that the size in the title matches your grill. A rack for another Oval will not seat correctly here.
Why would I add a second tier instead of a bigger grill?
Cost and space, mostly. An extension rack multiplies what one fire can cook without changing the footprint on your patio or the amount of charcoal you burn. For anyone who occasionally needs more room rather than always needing it, that is a much better answer than moving up a grill size.
Is it useful for a long smoke?
Very. On a cook that runs for hours, a second tier means the same fire and the same fuel are producing twice as much food. Ribs, pork shoulder and chicken all suit it, since none of them need the intense direct heat that only the lower level provides.
Can I load both levels for the same cook?
Yes, that is the point of it. Keep in mind that the two levels do not behave identically on a direct fire — the upper one is further from the coals and runs gentler — so put whatever needs the most heat below and whatever is finishing or holding above.
Do I need it if I already have a rib rack?
They solve the same problem in different ways. A rib rack stands ribs on edge so more of them fit on one grate; an extension rack adds a whole second grate. Plenty of people use both, particularly when the ribs are only part of what is going on the grill.
