The Primo Grate and Deflector Lifting Tool handles the two things you most need to move on a hot kamado: the cooking grate and the heat deflector sitting under it. One tool covers both, which is the difference between it and a plain grate lifter.
The cook it exists for is the common one. You smoke or roast indirect with a deflector in place, then you want direct fire at the end for colour and crust. That means taking out a grate and lifting out a deflector plate that has been absorbing heat for hours, in a confined dome opening, without dropping ceramic onto a lit fire. Have somewhere heatproof already picked out to set it down, because you do not want to be looking for one with a hot plate in the tool.
It works with Primo heat deflector plates for the Oval Large and the matching sets for the other sizes, and with frames like Primo heat deflector rack and drip pan rack for the Oval X-Large. If you only ever move grates, the simpler Primo Grate Lifter covers that on its own. Everything else is in Primo grill accessories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Any of them. It is a hand tool, not a size-matched accessory, so the same one serves a Round and an Oval XX-Large. The only practical difference by size is weight, since a larger deflector plate carries more mass and more stored heat, so it is worth moving slowly and with both hands on the handle.
The grate lifter does one job: it hooks and raises cooking grates. This tool is built to handle deflector plates and racks as well, so it covers the whole indirect setup rather than just the layer you cook on. If you regularly swap between indirect and direct heat, the extra reach is what you are paying for.
That is precisely what the tool is for, and it is why moving deflectors with tongs or gloves is a poor idea. A deflector that has been in place for a long cook is holding a great deal of heat, so lift it steadily, keep it level, and set it straight onto a surface you know can take it rather than pausing halfway.
Only if you move deflectors. Owners who run indirect setups and then finish over direct fire tend to want it, since the alternative is stopping the cook while things cool down. If your deflector goes in before the fire is lit and comes out the next day when everything is cold, a grate lifter alone is enough.
Yes, both parts of an indirect setup are within its scope, which matters because on most Primo builds the plate and the frame it rests in come out as separate pieces. See Primo heat deflector plates for the Oval X-Large for the plates themselves, and check which pieces your own configuration uses before you start lifting anything hot.
