The Primo Grate Lifter hooks a hot cooking grate and lifts it clear of the grill. That is a small job with a large payoff, because everything underneath the grate becomes unreachable the moment the fire is lit, and mid-cook you often need to get down there.
Adding a chunk of wood for smoke, spreading coals that have burned unevenly, or dropping in a deflector partway through a cook all mean moving a grate that is hot and usually still loaded. Tongs and a folded towel do it badly. A lifter gives you two hooked points of contact and a handle far enough back to keep your forearms out of the opening.

Will this work on my size of Primo?
Yes. The lifter is a hand tool rather than a size-matched part, so it works the same on a Round as it does on an XX-Large. What varies is the grate you are lifting: a larger oval grate is heavier and more awkward, so take it slowly and set down somewhere heatproof that you have picked out in advance.
Why not just use tongs and gloves?
Because a hot grate with food on it wants to tip. Tongs give you one gripping point and no leverage, so the grate swings as soon as it clears the rim. A lifter hooks the grate in two places and keeps your hands well back from the dome opening, which is where most of the heat is coming out.
Can it lift heat deflector plates as well?
This one is made for cooking grates. If you want a tool that also handles hot deflector plates and their racks, the Primo Grate and Deflector Lifting Tool is the one built for both jobs. Plenty of owners keep the grate lifter for everyday cooking and add the other tool once they start switching between direct and indirect mid-cook.
Didn't a grate lifter come with my grill?
It may have done. Primo's All-In-One grill packages list an ash tool and a grate lifter among their contents, so look in the box before ordering. Buying separately makes sense if you bought a grill head on its own, run more than one Primo, or have simply lost the original somewhere in the garage.
