Will these deflector plates fit my Primo Oval Large?
They fit the Oval Large and nothing else. Each Primo size takes its own plate shape, so an Oval Large set will not sit properly in a Junior or an X-Large, and the reverse is equally true. If you are not certain which model you have, check that before ordering rather than after.
Do I get one plate or two?
Two. The Oval Large listing is a two-piece set and both pieces are included, which is what a full indirect setup on this grill takes. You are not buying half a barrier and coming back for the other half later.
Does this listing include the rack the plates sit on?
No. The plates and the rack are sold separately. The rack is the frame that lifts a plate or a pan above the fire; the plates are what actually stop the heat. For this size the frame is the Primo Heat Deflector Rack/Drip Pan Rack for Oval Large.
Can I still sear with the deflector plates in place?
Not really. The point of the plates is to keep flame and radiant heat off the food, which is the opposite of what searing needs. Take them out for high-heat work, or set only one plate so half the fire stays open and you have a hot side to finish over.
What changes when I add a heat deflector to my Oval Large?
You go from a grill to an oven. Food no longer sits in the fire's direct line, so it cooks evenly top to bottom instead of scorching underneath, and the grill will hold a low temperature for the length of a barbecue cook. Pulled pork, beef ribs, whole birds and baked dishes all start here.

A heat deflector decides what kind of cooker you own on any given day. Leave it out and the Oval Large runs direct, which is what steaks, burgers and chops want: fierce heat straight off the coals, on and off the grate quickly. Set the plates in and nothing on the grate sees flame. Heat travels around the barrier instead of through it, the dome settles at a steady temperature, and you can leave a brisket or a rack of ribs alone for hours at a time.
