This hinge and handle kit fits Pre-2015 Primo Oval Large grills only. The pre-2015 and post-2015 Large use different hinge hardware, and buying the wrong one leaves you with parts that do not go on your grill, so the era matters every bit as much as the size does.
Older Larges are worth keeping alive. The ceramic tends to outlive the metalwork, and a grill that still cooks perfectly well can be let down by a hinge that has gone soft or bands that no longer hold the shell tight. This kit renews all of it at once: hinge, bands, handle.
The usual complaints are a dome that will not stay where you put it, a handle with play in it, or a lid that has started resting heavier on one side than the other. Take the last one seriously. A dome that closes off-square breaks the seal between the two halves, and every low-temperature cook after that becomes a fight.
This is hardware for the earlier Primo Oval Large ceramic charcoal grill. A grill of that vintage often wants the Primo replacement gasket for the Oval X-Large 400 and Large 300 at the same time, since both parts wear on the same timescale. How do I know if I need the pre-2015 Large kit rather than the post-2015 one?
It comes down to when the grill was made, so work from when it was sold. Bought new before 2015, this page is the right one. Bought later, you want the Post-2015 Oval Large hinge and handle kit. Nothing about a wrong-era kit can be made to fit, so it is worth pinning down the date rather than estimating it.
What parts come in the kit?
Three: the hinge, the bands that wrap the ceramic dome and base, and the handle. They are sold together because they work together, and on a grill old enough to need one of them, the other two are almost always the same age and the same distance into their working life.
The ceramic on my old Large is still perfect. Is a hinge kit worth it?
Usually yes. Ceramic is the expensive part and the part that lasts, while the hardware bolted around it takes the mechanical abuse. If the shell is sound and the grill still holds heat, renewing the hinge, bands and handle is a modest job that gets you back to a dome that opens easily and closes square.
Will this fit my Round or my Oval Junior?
No. It is cut for the Large shell. The Round has its own kit and the Junior has a single kit that covers both the pre-2015 and post-2015 grills, so go to the listing that names your model rather than assuming a nearby size will clamp up.
Do I need any special tools?
Ordinary hand tools are the usual answer, plus a second person. The important part is not the tooling but the sequence: cold grill, dome supported before the bands come loose, and everything left finger-tight until the dome is sitting square against the base. Tighten too early and you lock in a bad alignment.
