Primo Precision Control Kit Junior PGCJR

Is this the right control kit for a Primo Oval Junior?

Yes, it is the Junior kit. Each size in the range has its own, so a Junior owner buys this one and nothing else. If you have more than one Primo, note that you cannot move a control kit between them the way you can move a thermometer or a hand tool; these are bought against a specific grill.

What does a temperature controller do that a thermometer does not?

It acts. Put simply, a thermometer hands you a reading and leaves the decision to you, and a controller takes a target from you and then works to keep the grill sitting on it. On a Junior that means you set your target and the cook proceeds at it, rather than you standing over a small fire making constant small corrections because a compact firebox reacts quickly to every adjustment you make.

Does the Junior really need one? It is a small grill.

Size is not what decides it; cook length is. A Junior doing burgers on a Saturday has no use for a controller. A Junior running a pork shoulder overnight has exactly the same problem as a bigger grill, with slightly less thermal reserve to ride out a change in the weather, so the case is arguably stronger rather than weaker.

Can I fit the Large or X-Large kit to my Junior instead?

No. The kits are listed by grill size and are matched to the grill named in the title. If you are shopping across sizes because you own more than one Primo, look at the Primo Precision Control Kit X-Large for the X-Large and buy each grill its own, rather than trying to make one serve both.

Will I still need to keep an eye on the cook?

Yes, just far less often. A controller works on the temperature, not on the fuel, so it is still on you to load enough charcoal for the hours you intend to cook and to light it well. What it takes away is the routine of getting up to nudge a vent because the fire has drifted while you were not watching.
