What are the dimensions of this smoker box?
It measures 8 inches long by 5 inches wide by 1-1/4 inches deep. That is the footprint you need to clear on your cooking grid or over your heat plates.
The shallow 1-1/4 inch depth means it slides under most hoods without fouling the lid, but it also holds a limited volume of chips, so plan on refilling it during longer cooks.
Will it work on my Broilmaster grill?
Yes, it sits loose rather than bolting in, so it works on any grill with an 8 by 5 inch clear area on the cooking grid or over the heat plates. Nothing has to be removed or modified to use it.
Measure the open space on your grate before ordering if your grill is a compact model, and see the rest of the Broilmaster lineup for the grills it pairs with.
Where do I place it to control how much smoke I get?
Place it directly on the heat plates or the lava or ceramic radiants for stronger smoke flavor. Setting it on the cooking grid instead puts more distance between the chips and the flame, which gives a milder result.
That gives you two settings without changing anything else about how you cook, so you can dial the smoke up for ribs and back down for chicken or fish.
What kind of wood chips can I use in it?
Any flavor wood chips you prefer, including mesquite and hickory. The box does not restrict you to one type, so you can match the wood to what you are cooking.
Does the lid come off, and why is it vented?
The lid is removable and vented. You lift it off to load chips, then put it back so the vents meter the smoke out over time instead of letting the chips flare and burn off at once.
The box is cast iron, which is what lets it sit directly on the radiants or heat plates rather than only on the cooler cooking grid.
