The Primo Extension Rack for the Oval X-Large puts a second tier of cooking space above the main grate. The grill stays the same size on your patio and gains a whole additional level of food.

The X-Large already has the cooking bed most people are buying Primo for, so the reason to add a tier here is rarely desperation and usually organisation. Slower items go up, the fast searing work stays down, and a cook that would have run in two shifts runs in one. On a long smoke it is simply more output for the same charcoal, the same vents and the same hours of attention.

Fits the Primo Oval X-Large ceramic charcoal grill and the Oval X-Large All-In-One package. It works well with the Primo 9-slot rib rack for the Oval X-Large when ribs are the whole point of the day, and with the Primo X-Large Griddle, which occupies the main level on its own. The wider range sits in Primo grill accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grill does this extension rack fit?

The Primo Oval X-Large. Extension racks are cut to the grill they sit in, so this one belongs in an X-Large and the Large and Junior have their own versions. If you own more than one Primo, buy the rack named for each rather than assuming they cross over.

How much extra room does a second tier give me?

It gives you a second working level over the same fire rather than a stated area, and how much you get out of it depends on what you put up there. In practice it is the difference between cooking everything in one pass and running the grill twice.

Is the upper level as hot as the main grate?

Not on a direct fire — it sits higher above the coals, so it runs gentler. Use that rather than fight it: sear and cook hard on the main grate, and put anything finishing, resting or holding on the tier above. On a low indirect cook the gap between them narrows considerably.

Can I run ribs on both levels?

Yes, and combining it with a 9-slot rib rack on the lower grate is how people get a serious quantity of ribs onto one X-Large. The rack stands the ribs on edge below, the extension tier holds more above, and one fire does all of it.

Do I have to take it out for normal grilling?

It is easier to work on a clear grate for everyday cooking, so most people fit it for the cooks that need it and lift it out afterwards. There is nothing stopping you leaving it in; it just means reaching past a second level every time you turn a burger.
