Description  

The Primo Heat Deflector Rack/Drip Pan Rack for the Oval Large is the two-piece frame that carries your indirect setup. Read the name literally: this is the rack, and the deflector plate or drip pan that goes on it is a separate purchase.

Because it takes either one, the rack is the piece that stays put while everything else changes around it. Load it with a barrier for a long, slow cook. Load it with a pan and you keep fat off the fire and away from the ceramic while a shoulder renders down. Leave it empty and the Oval Large is a direct grill again. Being able to switch without rebuilding the fire is most of the reason the rack exists.

The matching barrier is the Primo Heat Deflector Plates for Oval Large, the matching pan is the Primo Half Drip Pan Oval Large, and the Primo Cast Iron Firebox Divider for Oval Large sorts out where the charcoal burns underneath. Does this rack come with heat deflector plates?

No, it does not. The rack is the frame and the plates are the barrier, and Primo sells them as separate listings. If you are setting up the Oval Large for indirect cooking from scratch, you need both this rack and the Primo Heat Deflector Plates for Oval Large.

Will it fit my Primo Oval Large?

Yes. This rack is built to the Oval Large and belongs in that grill alone. Sizes are not interchangeable across the Primo range, so a Junior or X-Large rack will not sit properly here even though it looks similar in a photo.

Is this one rack or two?

It is a two-piece listing, so both halves arrive together. That pairs with the two-piece deflector plate set for the Oval Large, giving you support across the firebox rather than under one side of it. There is no second listing to buy to complete the frame.

Can I use the rack to hold just a drip pan?

Yes. It is named a drip pan rack for that reason. Running a pan on its own is useful for roasts where you want to collect juices and keep grease off the fire without fully blocking the heat. The Primo Half Drip Pan Oval Large is the pan for this size.

What is the difference between this and the deflector plates for the Oval Large?

The plates block radiant heat from the fire; this rack holds them up. Buy only the rack and you have a support with nothing on it. Buy only the plates and you have a barrier with nowhere to rest. A working indirect setup on the Oval Large uses both.
