The Primo Half Drip Pan Oval Large is the half-size pan for the Oval Large. It sits under the food to collect fat and juices before they reach the fire.
Most of the mess a charcoal grill makes comes from drippings landing on hot coals and ceramic. A pan takes that out of the equation, and it changes the taste of the cook too, because you are no longer producing acrid smoke off burning fat. There is a bonus at the other end: what collects in the pan under a shoulder or a chicken is the base of a gravy or a sauce, and it is a great deal easier to pour out of a fitted pan than to scrape off a deflector plate. It covers half the cooking bed, which is why it pairs so well with a two-zone fire.

Will this fit my Primo Oval Large?
Yes. This is the Oval Large half pan and it is made to that grill. Primo drip pans are size-specific, so a pan from a Junior or an X-Large will not sit correctly in a Large. The size named in the title is the fit.
What does a fitted drip pan give me over a foil tray?
It is shaped for the grill rather than folded by hand, so it stays where you set it and holds its shape when it fills up. It also comes back out and gets used again, which a crumpled foil tray generally does not after a long cook.
Does the pan sit on the deflector rack?
Yes. The rack is the frame that supports a pan or a deflector plate above the fire, and for this grill that is the Primo Heat Deflector Rack/Drip Pan Rack for Oval Large. Without a rack, the pan has nowhere to sit between the coals and the food.
Can I save what collects in the pan?
That is one of the quieter advantages of using one. Juices from a roast or a shoulder end up in the pan instead of burning off on the coals, and they can go straight into a sauce or gravy once the cook is finished.
Does a half pan cover the whole cooking bed?
No, and it is not meant to. It covers roughly one zone of the grill, leaving the rest open. That is what makes it useful for two-zone cooking: shielded and catching drips on one side, open fire on the other.
