The Primo Heat Deflector Plates for the Oval XX-Large are the two-piece barrier that lets the largest Primo Oval run indirect instead of direct. They are cut for the XX-Large firebox and fit that grill only.
A big firebox is only an advantage if you can control it. With nothing between the coals and the grate, a full charcoal load drives hard heat straight up and everything on the grill is in its path. The plates put a floor under that, so a long cook stays even from one end of the grate to the other and a full load of ribs or shoulders finishes at roughly the same time. Because the set is two pieces, you can also cover part of the fire and leave the rest open when you want a searing zone and a slow zone on the same cook.
The plates rest on the Primo Heat Deflector Rack/Drip Pan Rack for Oval XX-Large, sold separately, and the Primo Half Drip Pan Oval XX-Large sits above them for fat and juices. Will these deflector plates fit my Primo Oval XX-Large?
Yes, and only the XX-Large. Primo cuts deflector plates to the firebox they cover, so plates from a smaller Oval leave gaps that let heat through and defeat the purpose. If your grill is the XX-Large, this is the set for it.
How many deflector plates are in the set?
Two, as the title says. Both pieces together form the full barrier over the XX-Large firebox, so one listing gets you the complete set rather than a single plate you have to double up on later. What it does not include is the rack the plates sit on, which is ordered separately.
Can I run half the grill indirect and half direct?
Yes, and the two-piece design is what makes it easy. Set one plate over part of the fire and leave the other side uncovered, and you have a shielded zone for slower items and open flame for anything that wants a hard sear, without opening the grill to rearrange coals.
Does this include the deflector rack or a drip pan?
No. This listing is the plates on their own. Why would I need deflector plates if I already have a firebox divider?
They solve different problems. A divider partitions the firebox so charcoal burns in one section, which controls where the fire is and how much fuel you light. A deflector sits above the fire and blocks its radiant heat from reaching the food. Most low-and-slow setups use both.
