What Size Built-In Grill Do You Need? A Sizing Guide by Household and Use
Start with the cut-out, not the advertised width, because they are frequently not the same number. The Coyote C-Series 30" C3C30 is sold as a 30-inch grill and needs a 25-inch opening — five inches narrower than its name. The AOG L-Series 36" goes the other way and needs 36.75 inches, three-quarters of an inch wider than its name. For most households the honest answer on size is 30 to 36 inches, and the more common mistake is buying too much grill for the island rather than too little.

Advertised width is not cut-out width
Grill model names describe the finished head, roughly, and manufacturers round them for marketing. The opening you cut in the island is a separate, exact figure published on the spec sheet, and it can be several inches either side of the name on the box. Three real examples from our own spec data:
- The Coyote C-Series 30" needs a 25.0" × 10.25" × 20.5" opening — a 30-inch grill in a 25-inch hole.
- The RCS Cutlass Elite 38" needs 41.25 inches of width. The Coyote SL-Series 42" needs 39.5. The nominally smaller grill needs the bigger hole.
- The Coyote SL-Series 36" changes cut-out with fuel: the natural gas C3SL36NG wants 33.5 inches and the propane C3SL36LP wants 32.5 inches. Same series, same nominal size, one inch apart.

Notice that cut-out depth is far more consistent than width — almost everything lands between 19.5 and 21.7 inches — while cut-out height varies from 8.0 to 11.75 inches. Height is the dimension that catches people retrofitting into an old island with a shallow apron.
Sizing by household and entertaining
These are working recommendations, not a specification. Cooking-area figures are not comparable across brands, so we size by width and burner count rather than by square inches.
One or two people, no regular entertaining: 24" to 28". Two or three burners is enough for two proteins and a vegetable at different temperatures, and you stop heating grate you never use. The AOG T-Series 24" at $3,115 and the L-Series 24" at $4,088 are the 24-inch options; both take a 24.5-inch opening. At 25 to 26 inches, look at the TrueFlame E Series 25" at $1,389, the RCS Premier 26" at $1,484 and the Artisan American Eagle 26" at $2,105. At 28 inches the Bonfire Whistler 3 at $1,679 is the option, and it includes a rotisserie.

A family that entertains most weekends: 34" to 36". The extra six inches over a 30 is where a proper indirect zone becomes possible while the rest of the grate stays hot. Serious volume, or a grill as the centrepiece: 50" and up. There is no orderable 44-inch head on this site right now, so the practical jump is from 42 inches straight to 50. Why the biggest grill that fits is usually the wrong grill
Island width is a fixed budget and the grill is only one line item in it. Everything else has to come out of the same run of counter:
- Landing area on both sides of the grill. Somewhere to set a hot tray down without turning around. This is the single most-regretted omission in a finished island.
- Prep surface. A cutting board's worth of counter you are not also using as a landing zone.
- A side burner or power burner, if you want to make a sauce or boil shellfish outside. Read the side burner FAQs before you commit the width.

- Access doors, drawers and a trash pull-out. Storage you will use every cook.
A 42-inch head dropped into an eight-foot island leaves very little room for the rest of that list once you allow for corner returns and the structure between bays. Buying a 36-inch grill and keeping eighteen inches of usable counter on each side produces a better outdoor kitchen than buying a 42 and cooking off the top of the grill hood. Short FAQ
How much wider than the grill should the island be?
There is no code figure we will invent for you. As a rule of thumb only, plan a minimum of 12 to 18 inches of usable counter on each side of the grill; more if the grill sits near a corner. Clearances to combustible construction, to structures overhead and to adjacent appliances come from the manufacturer's installation manual and local code, and should be confirmed by a licensed professional.
Does a bigger grill cook better?
No. It cooks more at once. A four-burner 32-inch grill and a five-burner 40-inch grill sear identically; the larger one just lets you hold more food off the heat while you do it.
Should I match the grill size to my old one?
Match the cut-out, not the nominal size. Two grills both badged 30 inches can want openings four inches apart, as this page's table shows. Start at the replacement cut-out finder.
Does the cut-out change if I need an insulating liner?

Which fuel should I plan for?

Final recommendation
Most households should buy a 30 to 36-inch built-in grill. Below 30 inches you lose the ability to run a genuine indirect zone; above 36 inches you start taking counter away from the prep, landing and storage that make the island usable. Choose 24 to 28 inches only when the island is genuinely narrow or the grill is a secondary appliance. Choose 40 inches and up only if you regularly cook for more than a dozen people and the island is long enough to absorb it. In every case, buy to the published cut-out, not to the number in the model name.
