A 36" built-in grill does not need a 36" hole. Depending on the brand, a nominal 36" head requires a cutout width anywhere from 32.5" to 36.75" — a spread of more than four inches across models that all call themselves 36 inches. This page collects the published cutout width, height and depth for every active built-in grill, side burner, power burner and insulating liner we carry, organised by brand and series. Where a figure is not published we write "Not yet verified" rather than guessing.

Always confirm against the manufacturer's current installation manual before cutting. Dimensions change between model generations.
The advertised size is a marketing designation, usually derived loosely from the cooking surface or the hood width. The cutout is an engineering figure: the finished opening the appliance drops into. Two things drive the gap. Most built-in heads have a flange that laps over the opening, so the opening must be narrower than the body — cut to the overall dimension and the flange has nothing to sit on. And some manufacturers take the nominal size at the hood while others take it at the cooking grate, so two "36 inch" grills can differ by inches of actual body width.
Cutout depth is the figure most likely to catch you out, because brands do not measure it the same way. Some publish the opening depth from the front face of the island back; others publish the depth required from the countertop overhang; others publish clear interior depth. A depth figure is not transferable between brands. Treat every depth below as belonging only to the model beside it, and verify it in that manufacturer's manual.
A third trap: an insulating liner has its own, larger cutout. If your island is combustible and needs a liner, build to the liner's opening, not the grill's. Those figures have their own section below, and the insulating liner FAQs explain when a liner is required at all.
All dimensions below are inches, given as Width × Height × Depth, exactly as published on each product listing. If you are matching a new head to an island that already exists, start with the replacement built-in grill cutout finder.

Note the 15" cutout height on every hybrid series — Muscle, Encore and Ovation all need five extra inches of opening height compared with the gas-only Estate and Alturi heads, because they carry a charcoal and wood tray. That is the single most common sizing surprise in this brand. Full range at American Made Grills built-in grills; background in the American Made Grills FAQs.

American Outdoor Grills is the outlier at 36": its 36.75" cutout is the widest of any nominal 36" grill in this reference, and more than four inches wider than Coyote's. If you are replacing a Coyote or Summerset head with an AOG head, the opening almost certainly has to be enlarged. It is also the shallowest cutout height in the reference at 8.5", which is why AOG heads often drop into islands that will not take a hybrid. See the AOG built-in grills and the AOG FAQs.

Note on the 36" SL Series. The natural gas listing publishes a 33.5" cutout width and the propane listing publishes 32.5" for what is otherwise the same head. We have not resolved which figure is current, so we publish both rather than picking one. Confirm against the installation manual for your exact model and fuel type before cutting.
Note also that the Coyote C Series and SL Series 30" heads take a 25.0" opening — a full five inches narrower than the nominal size, and the largest nominal-to-cutout gap in this reference. Coyote's pellet grills need a 16.5" cutout height, far more than the gas heads. See Coyote built-in grills and the Coyote FAQs.

RCS is the brand where the nominal-versus-cutout distinction is most dramatic and runs the opposite way to everyone else: the Cutlass Elite 30" requires a 33.0" opening — three inches wider than its own name — and the 38" requires 41.25". Anyone sizing an RCS island from the model name will cut the hole too small. See RCS built-in grills and the RCS FAQs.

Memphis is the clearest example of nominal size being no guide at all: the Pro 28 takes a 30.25" opening, wider than its own nominal size, and the Elite 39 takes 42.625". All three Memphis heads need a 16.75" cutout height, which is roughly double a typical gas head. Memphis states its grills are designed, engineered and tested in the USA; it does not claim US manufacture, and we do not claim it on their behalf. The American Made Grills Atlas double side burner is the odd one out at 20.25" wide and only 10.25" deep — it is a wide, shallow drop-in rather than the tall narrow box most brands use, so it is not interchangeable with a 12" opening. More on choosing between these in the side burner FAQs, and the full range in burners.
Where the island is combustible, the liner's cutout is the one you build to. These openings are consistently larger than the grill's own — typically two to seven inches wider — which is exactly why a liner cannot be added to a finished island without recutting.

Compare the AOG 36" grill cutout (36.75") with its 36-IL-C liner cutout (40.625") — nearly four inches wider. The full range is at grill liners.
We would rather tell you what we do not have than let you discover it mid-project.
There is no single answer, which is the point of this page. Among active 36" models the published cutout width runs from 32.5" (Coyote CL and SL Series) to 36.75" (American Outdoor Grills), with American Made Grills at 34.0"–35.0" and Artisan at 34.5". Find your exact model in the tables above.
Sometimes, and only if the numbers actually match in all three dimensions. Start with the replacement cutout finder, then confirm in the manual for the new head.
Because it carries a charcoal and wood tray beneath the gas burners. American Made Grills hybrids need 15.0" of cutout height against 10.25" for the gas-only Estate heads.
Yes, substantially. If a liner is required, build to the liner's opening, not the grill's. The liner tables above give both figures for the models where we hold data.
Get the figure from the manufacturer's current installation manual, or call us on 843-212-7209 and we will look it up with you. We will not estimate it from the overall dimensions, because that is how islands get cut wrong.
Treat this page as a planning and shortlisting tool, not as a cutting document. Its right use is narrowing choices before you buy — seeing that an American Outdoor Grills 36" head needs a materially wider opening than a Coyote 36", or that every Memphis pellet grill needs 16.75" of height, changes which grills belong on your list.
The buyer best served here is the one designing an island that does not exist yet, because you can still choose the grill first and let its cutout drive the design. If your island already exists, the replacement cutout finder is the better starting point. Either way: always confirm against the manufacturer's current installation manual before cutting, because dimensions change between model generations. Gas, clearances, combustible construction, ventilation and electrical all defer to that manual, to local code, and to a licensed professional.
