A 42-inch Artisan Professional is the largest head in the Artisan range, and in a combustible island it also needs the largest jacket. The ARTIJ-42 is the insulated jacket Alfresco documents for its 42-inch Artisan built-ins, the ARTP-42 among them, and Alfresco requires one of its jackets whenever the enclosure is built from combustible materials such as wood framing. Like the smaller sizes it is self-supporting 304 stainless steel, and the grill slides into it on the jacket's support rails. The opening grows with it: 43-1/4" W x 23-5/8" D x 10-1/4" H with the jacket, against 40-1/2" x 19-3/4" x 9-1/2" for the grill alone. On a counter run this long, that extra 2-3/4" of width is worth fixing on paper before the first stud goes in. Our SKU is ART-IJ42.

Key Features

  • For the 42" Artisan Professional — the ARTIJ-42 is the jacket Alfresco documents for its 42-inch Artisan built-ins, including the ARTP-42.
  • Carries the largest Artisan head — a self-supporting 304 stainless steel jacket that the 42-inch grill slides into.
  • Required in combustible islands — Alfresco calls for one of its own jackets whenever the enclosure is built from combustible materials.
  • Longest counter run in the range — 44-5/8" wide overall, so allow for it when laying out doors, drawers and side burners either side.
  • Utility openings — a cable hole for the Professional's 110V ignition and lighting, plus access to the gas connection.
  • Bolt-together panels — assembled from left, right, bottom and rear panels with the supplied hardware and a #2 Phillips screwdriver.

Model and Installation Information

In our catalog the ARTIJ-42 fits the Artisan Professional 42" Built-In Grill (ARTP-42). Alfresco also documents it for the 42-inch Artisan Series ART-42, which we do not currently stock. It is not used with the ARTP-42C cart grill.

The jacketed island opening is 43-1/4" W x 23-5/8" D x 10-1/4" H, and the jacket itself measures 44-5/8" x 24-5/8" x 11-9/16". Compared with the bare ARTP-42 cutout of 40-1/2" x 19-3/4" x 9-1/2", that is 2-3/4" more width and 3-7/8" more depth to design around. Alfresco's assembly sheet has the jacket bolted together from four panels, the grill's countertop support ring removed (its six screws saved and refitted once the grill is in), the head slid in over the support rails, the power cord routed out through the jacket's cable hole, and the unit bedded into the counter on clear silicone. Confirm all dimensions with the spec sheet and the ARTP-42 installation manual, and have a licensed installer sign off the gas connection and local code. More planning help is in our built-in grill cutout dimensions guide.

Who This Model Is Best For

The ARTIJ-42 is for the owner of a 42-inch Artisan Professional building a large, framed outdoor kitchen, where the grill is the centerpiece of a long counter run and the enclosure is wood or another combustible material. At this size the jacket shapes the whole layout, so it is best ordered alongside the grill and handed to the builder with the drawings. A fully non-combustible masonry island may not require a jacket; the ARTP-42 installation manual and local code settle that. See our insulating grill liners FAQs for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grill does the ARTIJ-42 fit?

In our catalog, the Artisan Professional 42" Built-In Grill (ARTP-42). Alfresco also documents it for the 42-inch Artisan Series ART-42.

How big is the island opening with the jacket?

43-1/4" W x 23-5/8" D x 10-1/4" H. The ARTP-42 alone needs 40-1/2" x 19-3/4" x 9-1/2". Confirm against the spec sheet and grill manual before cutting.

Is the jacket required?

When the island is built from combustible materials, yes — Alfresco requires one of its own insulated jackets. For a fully non-combustible island, the ARTP-42 manual and local code decide.

Does it fit the ARTP-42C cart grill?

No. The jacket is only for built-in installation.

How does the grill go into the jacket?

Per Alfresco's assembly sheet, the countertop support ring is removed from the grill, the grill slides into the jacket over its support rails, and the ring's six screws are reinstalled. The power cord routes through the jacket's cable hole.

Is ART-IJ42 the same as ARTIJ-42?

Yes. ARTIJ-42 is Alfresco's model number; ART-IJ42 is our listing SKU.
