The Primo Curved Ash Tool is for raking spent ash out of the bottom of a ceramic grill. The curve is the point of it: a kamado's firebox is a bowl rather than a flat tray, and a straight tool rides over the ash that banks up around the sides instead of pulling it out.
Ash matters more on a ceramic cooker than most people expect. The bottom vent is the fire's entire air supply, and once ash piles against it the fire is being starved without you touching a thing. The grill that will not climb to searing temperature, or that quietly dies partway through a long cook while you blame the charcoal, is very often just a grill full of ash. Clearing it before you light is the cheapest habit in kamado ownership.
Useful on any of the Primo ceramic charcoal grills, whatever size you run. Pair it with the Primo Grate Lifter so you can get the cooking grate out of the way first, and with Primo 100% natural lump charcoal for the fuel that goes back in. The rest of the tools are in Primo grill accessories.
Frequently Asked Questions
All of them. Nothing in this listing ties it to one size, and unlike a deflector or a gasket it is a hand tool rather than a fitted part, so a Round owner and an XX-Large owner use the same thing. The curve suits the bowl shape a kamado firebox has, regardless of how big that bowl is.
Because of the shape and the timing. The curve reaches ash out of the sides of the bowl where a flat blade skates past, and raking is something you can do while a grill still holds warm embers. A vacuum is for cold, fully dead ash only, and even then it will not pull ash out of the corners the way a raking tool does.
Check before every cook and clear it whenever there is enough to reach the bottom vent. Long low cooks and back-to-back sessions build it up faster than a single quick grill. There is no benefit in leaving it: ash does not help the fire, and the moment it starts blocking the air intake it works directly against you.
Primo's All-In-One grill packages are listed as including an ash tool and a grate lifter, so check what came in the box before you add another. If you bought the grill head on its own, or you are replacing a tool that has been left out in the rain once too often, this is the standalone listing.
