Is American Outdoor Grills a good brand?

American Outdoor Grills (AOG) is made by Robert H. Peterson Co. of City of Industry, California, the same manufacturer behind Fire Magic. AOG is the more accessible of the two lines and shares Peterson's engineering, its 304 stainless steel construction and its lifetime housing and burner warranty. If you want a serious built-in grill without stepping up to a top-tier price, AOG is one of the strongest values on the market. NorthwoodsGrills is an authorized AOG dealer. Where are American Outdoor Grills made?

The manufacturer's own wording is that AOG grills are engineered, fabricated and assembled in the USA. R.H. Peterson Co. operates out of City of Industry, California. A US-manufacture claim is supportable for this brand, which is not true of every grill line sold as "American."

What is the difference between the AOG T-Series and the L-Series?

AOG builds two series, and the practical difference is interior lighting.

  • T-Series has no interior lights. It uses AOG's Rapid Light piezo ignition, which needs no electricity and no batteries at all. The control knobs have red flared bezels. See the 30" T-Series natural gas AOG30TN.
  • L-Series adds halogen lights inside the hood, which require a 120V AC connection at the grill. Ignition is a battery-free electronic push-to-start. The control knobs have black flared bezels. See the 30" L-Series natural gas AOG30LN.

Both series are offered in the same three widths, so choose on lighting and power availability. If your island already has a 120V circuit and you cook after dark, the L-Series earns its cost. If there is no power at the island, the T-Series is the series that will actually work. What sizes do AOG grills come in?

Three widths across both series: 24 inch, 30 inch and 36 inch. The 24" models are two-burner grills; the 30" and 36" models are three-burner grills.

How do I choose between natural gas and propane?

AOG grills are built for one fuel and ordered that way. The SKU tells you which: a SKU ending in N is natural gas, a SKU ending in P is propane. AOG36LN is a 36" L-Series natural gas grill; AOG30TP is a 30" T-Series propane grill. Order natural gas only if you have a gas line at the island, and confirm the line is sized for the grill's demand before you buy. Otherwise order propane. Can I convert an AOG grill from natural gas to propane?

Yes, through the manufacturer. In AOG's words, "A certified kit is available from the manufacturer to convert your appliance from natural gas to L.P. or vice versa." A conversion means changing the brass orifices, switching the convertible regulator where one is fitted, and replumbing the gas supply. Unauthorized modifications void the warranty, so use the certified kit and have a qualified gas technician do the work. It is simpler and usually cheaper to order the correct fuel version up front. What does the American Outdoor Grills warranty cover?

AOG's published warranty is one of the reasons the brand sells so well:

  • Lifetime on stainless steel housings and burners, for as long as the original purchaser owns the grill
  • 15 years on Diamond Sear stainless cooking grids
  • 10 years on valves, controls and manifolds
  • 3 years on backburners, rotisserie kits, vaporizer panels and GFRC island systems
  • 2 years on ignition systems (batteries excluded), electronic components, grill parts and accessories

Do I need an insulating liner?

You need one any time the grill drops into an island built with combustible framing, and many masonry builders specify one regardless. The liner is size-specific and shared across both series: 24-IL-C for 24" grills, 30-IL-C for 30" grills and 36-IL-C for 36" grills. Other brands are in our grill liners collection.

What should I buy with the grill?

How much do AOG grills cost?

Prices move, so shop by tier rather than by a number on a FAQ page. AOG grill heads generally land in the middle of the built-in market: see built-in grills $2,000-$3,500 and built-in grills $3,500-$5,000. If you are working to a tighter number, start with built-in grills under $2,000; if you are shopping the top of the market, see built-in grills over $5,000. Which brands should I cross-shop against AOG?

The closest comparisons at similar sizes and price are TrueFlame and Summerset, which are sibling brands from the same manufacturer and offer a broader range of refrigeration and storage.
