Two stainless steel U-burners, 40,000 BTUs and a 24-1/2" island opening make the AAEP-26 the most compact grill head in Artisan's American Eagle series. It is a drop-in unit, designed to be framed permanently into a masonry or steel outdoor kitchen island rather than rolled out on a cart, and it is built in the USA from commercial-grade 304 stainless steel so it can live outdoors year-round. Artisan offers it in two factory configurations, natural gas (AAEP-26-NG) and propane (AAEP-26-LP), so the grill matches the supply line your island already runs. Inside the 26" hood are ceramic briquettes, heavy-duty stainless grates, a dual-position warming rack and a built-in thermometer, which together cover everything from a weeknight simmer to lid-down roasting. It is the American Eagle head to specify when island width is genuinely tight and a rotisserie is not part of the plan.

Key Features

  • Two stainless steel U-burners — 20,000 BTUs each, 40,000 BTUs total across the cooking surface.
  • Fully adjustable brass valves — real low-end simmer control rather than a high-or-off flame.
  • 1/2" thick ceramic briquettes — sit between the burners and the grates to spread the flame into even radiant heat and eliminate hot spots over the burner tubes.
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel cooking grates — sized to the 26" head for heat retention and searing marks.
  • 9V electronic ignition — wiring encased in heat-resistant silicone for quick, reliable start-ups with no wall outlet involved.
  • Dual-position lift-up warming rack — adds holding space above the main grates.
  • Seamless double-walled hood with spring assist — retains heat and opens and closes with one hand.
  • Air curtain cooling system — draws air across the front so the control panel stays cool to the touch at high heat.
  • Recessed control panel — keeps the knobs protected from the weather.
  • Built-in hood thermometer — supports oven-style roasting with the lid down.
  • 304 stainless steel construction — commercial-grade, made in the USA.

Optional Accessories

  • Sear Zone Infrared Burner (ARTP-ISB) — 20,000 BTUs, ceramic surface for steakhouse-quality searing. Plan for it early so the gas supply is sized for the extra burner.
  • Sear Zone Grate (ASZG) — V-shaped flavorizer grate that captures juices.
  • Grill Cover (ART-26CV) — high-density canvas weather protection.
  • Wind Guard (ARTP-26WS) — stainless steel, for exposed installations.
  • Insulated Jacket (ARTIJ-26) — required for installation in combustible enclosures.

Model and Installation Information

This is model AAEP-26. The island opening it requires is 24-1/2" wide by 9-1/2" high by 19-3/4" deep, while the grill head itself measures 26" wide, 23-1/8" high and 26-3/8" deep, so the finished face overhangs the opening on each side. That 24-1/2" opening is the reason this head fits islands where a 32" or 36" American Eagle will not. Confirm the cutout against the spec sheet above and measure your framed opening before the island is built or modified.

If the island is built from combustible material, the ARTIJ-26 insulated jacket is required — a safety requirement rather than an optional upgrade. Islands framed in block, masonry or steel do not need one. Natural gas and propane are separate factory configurations ordered as AAEP-26-NG and AAEP-26-LP, so confirm which supply line your island runs before ordering.

Artisan publishes two BTU figures for this grill, and both are correct. The nominal burner rating of 40,000 BTUs is the figure to use when sizing the gas supply to the island; separately, Artisan publishes a certified total rated input of 37,600 BTU/hr for the appliance, certified to ANSI Z21.58 / CSA 1.6. For any individual grill, the definitive BTU rating and orifice size are printed on its serial plate, as Artisan's care and use manual directs.

Who This Model Is Best For

Two burners at 40,000 BTUs suit a household cooking for four to six people regularly. Pick the AAEP-26 when the framed opening in your island is the constraint — at 24-1/2" wide it drops into spaces that will not take a larger head — and when a rotisserie is not on your list, since this model does not include one. If you entertain larger groups or want rotisserie cooking, step up to the 32" or 36" American Eagle instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size opening do I build for the AAEP-26?

The cutout is 24-1/2" wide by 9-1/2" high by 19-3/4" deep. The grill head itself measures 26" wide, 23-1/8" high and 26-3/8" deep, so the finished face overhangs the opening on each side.

That 24-1/2" opening is the reason this model works in islands where a 32" or 36" head will not fit. Measure your framed opening before you commit to a size.

How many burners does it have and how much heat do they make?

Two stainless steel U-burners at 20,000 BTUs each, for 40,000 BTUs across the cooking surface. Fully adjustable brass valves control them, so you get real low-end simmer control rather than a high-or-off flame.

Is it natural gas or propane?

The AAEP-26 is built in both natural gas and propane versions. Confirm which supply line your island runs before you order, because the two are configured differently at the factory.

What stops hot spots over the burner tubes?

Half-inch thick ceramic briquettes sit between the burners and the grates and spread the flame into even radiant heat. Above them are heavy-duty stainless steel cooking grates.

Can I add an infrared sear burner later?

Yes. Artisan lists a 20,000 BTU Sear Zone infrared burner (ARTP-ISB) with a ceramic surface for this grill, along with a matching V-shaped Sear Zone grate (ASZG) that catches juices.

If you sear steaks often, plan for it early so your gas supply is sized for the extra burner.

Do I need an insulated jacket for my island?

Only if the island is built from combustible material. Artisan lists the ARTIJ-26 insulated jacket for that case, and it is a safety requirement rather than an optional upgrade.

Islands framed in block, masonry or steel do not need one.

How does it light?

A 9V electronic ignition fires the burners, and the wiring is encased in heat-resistant silicone so it survives long-term outdoor exposure. No wall outlet is involved.

Is there a cover made for this grill?

Artisan lists the ART-26CV high-density canvas cover for the 26" built-in. You can see it here: Artisan 26" built-in grill cover.

Will the knobs be too hot to touch?

The air curtain cooling system pulls air across the front and keeps the control panel cool to the touch even at high heat. The panel is also recessed, which keeps the knobs out of the weather.

Is the hood hard to lift?

No. The hood is seamless and double-walled for heat retention, and a spring-assisted lift carries the weight so it opens and closes with one hand.

What is it made of?

Commercial-grade 304 stainless steel, made in the USA. A dual-position lift-up warming rack and a built-in hood thermometer are part of the grill, so you can hold food warm and roast with the lid down.

Compare it against the rest of the range in our Artisan built-in grills collection.
