The Sear Zone is Artisan's optional infrared burner: the ART-ISB, a 20,000 BTU ceramic infrared burner that drops into the grill in place of one of the standard U-burners, in the left, center or right position. The ASZG is the cooking grate Artisan designs to go over it. Instead of flat rods it uses a V-shaped "flavorizer" profile, which Alfresco (Artisan's manufacturer) describes as capturing the juices, fats and flavors that fall from the food and caramelizing them back onto it. That matters more over an infrared burner than anywhere else on the grill, because the Sear Zone runs far hotter at the surface than a tube burner and cooks with very little flare-up, so drippings that would otherwise simply burn away have somewhere to go. Alfresco lists the ASZG as an optional accessory across the American Eagle, Artisan Series and Professional ranges.

Key Features

  • Made for the Artisan Sear Zone — Alfresco specifies it for use with the optional ART-ISB infrared sear burner.
  • V-shaped flavorizer profile — channels drippings and caramelizes them back onto the food rather than letting them fall straight through.
  • Pairs with a 20,000 BTU infrared burner — the ART-ISB is a ceramic infrared burner Artisan says cooks up to 50% faster with virtually no flare-ups.
  • Works wherever the sear burner goes — the ART-ISB can replace a U-burner in the left, center or right position.
  • Listed across three grill lines — Alfresco shows the ASZG as an optional accessory on American Eagle, Artisan Series and Professional series pages.
  • Drop-in grate — no tools or hardware; it sits in the grill like the standard grates.

Model and Installation Information

The ASZG is a grate, not a burner. On its own it does nothing a standard grate cannot; it is meant to sit over the Artisan ART-ISB infrared sear burner insert, which is sold separately. Alfresco lists the grate as an optional accessory on the series pages for the Artisan American Eagle 26" built-in (AAEP-26), Artisan American Eagle 32" built-in (AAEP-32) and Artisan American Eagle 36" built-in (AAEP-36) (and their carts), the Artisan Artisan Series 36" built-in (ART-36) and the 42-inch Artisan Series, and the Artisan Professional 32" built-in (ARTP-32) and Artisan Professional 36" built-in (ARTP-36).

Artisan's ART-ISB installation sheet describes the burner swap: remove the grate and briquette tray, replace a U-burner with the sear burner and reinstall. It also says the briquette tray must not be installed on top of the sear burner. Once the ART-ISB is in, the ASZG drops into place above it. Alfresco does not publish dimensions for the ASZG, and it is not listed on every Artisan grill page, so if your grill is not named above, call us with the model number before ordering.

Who This Model Is Best For

This grate is for an Artisan owner who has fitted, or is about to fit, the Sear Zone infrared burner and cooks a lot of steaks, chops and burgers at high heat. Paired with the ART-ISB it turns one section of a standard Artisan grill into a dedicated searing station while the other burners stay available for lower-heat cooking. If you have not bought the sear burner yet, order the two together. If you mainly cook chicken, fish and vegetables, the standard grates will serve you well without it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ASZG for?

It is the V-shaped cooking grate Artisan makes for use over its optional Sear Zone infrared burner, the ART-ISB. The shape catches drippings and caramelizes them back onto the food.

Does it come with the sear burner?

No. The burner is sold separately as the ART-ISB. Artisan's installation sheet lists only the burner and electrode in that box.

Which grills is it listed for?

Alfresco lists the ASZG on its American Eagle 26, 32 and 36, Artisan Series 36 and 42, and Professional 32 and 36 series pages. Call us with your model number if yours is not on that list.

Can the sear burner go in any position?

Yes. Artisan says the ART-ISB can replace a U-burner in the left, center or right position.

Do I leave the briquette tray over the sear burner?

No. Artisan's ART-ISB installation sheet says the briquette tray must not be installed on top of the sear burner.

What are the grate's dimensions?

Alfresco does not publish them. It is designed as an Artisan accessory rather than a universal grate, so match it by grill model.
