Four inches of nominal width separate the ART-36 from its 32" sibling, and almost all of it lands on the cooking surface: 603 square inches of main grate against 530, with a larger 214 square inch warming rack above it, for an Artisan-published total of 818 square inches. The main grate itself measures 33-1/2" by 18", which is the practical difference — a whole rack of ribs laid flat, or the front half of the grate kept clear as a holding zone while the back runs hot. Everything else is the Artisan Series specification: three 304-series stainless U-burners under half-inch refractive ceramic briquettes and electro-polished non-stick grates, a 110V electronic ignition, interior halogen work lights, and a commercial-grade 304, 18-8 stainless body assembled with heli-arc hand-welded seams and no mechanical fasteners. The hood is seamless, double-walled and spring-assisted, with a thermometer set into the skin. There is no rear infrared burner on this series — that is what marks the Professional models — and no lit control knobs.

Model and Installation Information

The model number is ART-36, ordered as ART-36-NG for natural gas or ART-36-LP for propane; the orifices are different and the choice is made at order time. The island opening is 34-1/2" wide, 19-3/4" deep and 9-1/2" high. Hand the builder those three numbers, not the 36" name: the head is 35-13/16" wide overall and the trim laps the opening, so an opening cut to 36" leaves the grill sitting on air. Depth and height are shared with every other Artisan 36" head, which is useful if you are replacing an older American Eagle or Professional in an existing island — the hole does not change.

A note on the heat rating, because we would rather explain it than repeat it without comment. Artisan currently publishes "up to 71,400 BTUs" for the 36" Artisan Series, and publishes the same figure for the 36" Professional, which carries an additional rear infrared burner this model does not have. The two grills therefore cannot both be right. We have left Artisan's published figure in place because it is the manufacturer's own current number and we do not substitute our own arithmetic for it, but if the total output is decisive for you, call us and we will confirm the certified rating on the serial plate before you order.

Two other items to plan for. The 110V electronic ignition needs a 115 VAC supply on a GFI-protected circuit inside the island, and that same circuit runs the halogen lights — rough it in with the gas line. And if the enclosure is combustible, the ARTIJ-36 insulated jacket is required; it takes its own larger opening of 37-1/4" by 23-5/8" by 10-1/4", so the decision belongs at the framing stage. Who This Model Is Best For

Thirty-six inches is the size to specify when the grate has to hold a full cook rather than a family dinner — two racks of ribs, a dozen burgers with room left to toast buns, or a hot zone and a resting zone running at the same time. Within Artisan's 36" heads, the Artisan Series occupies the middle: more than the American Eagle AAEP-36, which lights on a 9V battery and gives you no interior lighting at all, and less than the Professional ARTP-36, whose rear infrared rotisserie burner and illuminated control panel account for the difference in price. Pick this one if you want to cook after dark and turn a knob to a live spark, but would never use a rear burner. If the island is already framed for 32", the ART-32 is the same grill in a narrower body.
