The Primo Pizza Oven for Oval Large is the pizza oven sized to the Primo Oval Large. It sits inside that grill's firebox and is sold for the Large alone, so the size word in the title is the whole compatibility question.
Good pizza on charcoal is mostly dough discipline. Stretch it thin and even, since a base that varies in thickness cooks at two speeds; keep sauce sparse and toppings drier than you think reasonable, because water on a hot surface turns to steam and steam is the enemy of a crisp bottom; and get the pie off the peel in one committed movement. Semolina or coarse flour on the peel does more for a clean launch than any technique, and a test slide before you open the grill saves the sort of accident that ends pizza night early.
The fire wants the same forethought. Light early and give the ceramic time to load up, keep the lid down between bakes so the heat you built stays where you put it, and let the surface come back between pies rather than launching the next one onto a stone that has just given all its heat to the last.
Made for the Primo Oval Large ceramic charcoal grill. Pair it with the 18 by 16 inch Oval Fredstone for the Oval Large, or with the 16-inch glazed ceramic baking stone if you want a round stone that also fits other Primo sizes. The bigger grill takes the Primo pizza oven for the Oval X-Large.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Each Primo pizza oven is made for one grill and seats inside that firebox, so this one belongs to the Oval Large and nothing else. If your grill is an X-Large, a Round or an XX-Large, buy the pizza oven listed under that size instead.
Either the oval Fredstone cut for the Large, which follows the shape of the firebox, or one of the round ceramic stones, which fit several Primo sizes. If you own more than one grill, the round natural finish stone moves between them; if you only own the Large, the oval stone uses more of the bed.
Lump charcoal, lit early and left alone. It reaches high temperatures readily and burns cleanly once it has settled, which matters when the food is only over the fire for a few minutes and has nowhere to hide from harsh smoke. Add fuel before you start cooking, not between pizzas.
As many as the stone can keep up with. Each pie draws heat out of the surface it lands on, so the honest limit is how quickly your setup recovers, not how much charcoal is left. Working in a steady rhythm with a pause between launches gets better results than rushing them out.
For everyday indirect cooking on the Large, deflector plates are the part that takes the fire off the food, and they are worth owning whether or not you cook pizza. How you arrange things for pizza specifically depends on how the pieces stack in your grill, so read the fitting instructions that come with the pizza oven.
It depends how often you cook pizza. A stone alone will bake a good pie, and plenty of people stop there. The pizza oven is what you buy when pizza has become a regular fixture and you want the setup to be the same every time rather than assembled from whatever is in the shed.
I absolutely love my Coyote gas grill! The quality is excellent, it looks beautiful, and I’m very happy with my purchase.
I also want to give a special thank you to Ryan at Northwoods Grills. He was incredibly helpful from the very beginning. Before my grill even arrived, he took the time to help me with measurements and answered all of my questions to make sure everything would fit properly. He was always very attentive, patient, friendly, and easy to communicate with. His customer service really made a difference and made the whole experience so much easier for me.
It’s not often that you receive this level of personal attention and customer service. I truly appreciate all of Ryan’s help and would absolutely recommend Northwoods Grills. Great product and outstanding customer service!
Best pricing available for the product (checked all other on line retailers), and Ryan provided excellent responsiveness during the sales process. Loved dealing directly with the owner vs a sales person.
Delivery was completed within a week of the order and Ryan stayed in touch with consistent follow-up to ensure the products met my expectations.
Will recommend to friends / others looking for a high-end built in grill and matching cabinets.
