The AAEP-36 is the widest built-in head in Artisan's American Eagle series: three 20,000 BTU stainless steel U-burners spread across a 36" cooking surface for 60,000 BTUs, which gives you the same three-zone control as the 32" head but with noticeably more grate to work with. It is a drop-in unit, made in the USA from 304 stainless steel and intended to be framed permanently into an outdoor kitchen island as the centerpiece of the run. Artisan stocks it as AAEP-36-NG for natural gas and AAEP-36-LP for propane. The seamless, welded, double-walled hood, half-inch ceramic briquettes, recessed control panel and built-in thermometer are the working parts of the grill; what it leaves out, compared with the Professional 36, is rotisserie hardware and lighting — which is exactly where the price difference comes from.

Key Features

  • Three stainless steel U-burners — 20,000 BTUs each, 60,000 BTUs total spread across the 36" head.
  • Fully adjustable brass valves — genuine low-end control, not just an on-off flame.
  • Seamless, welded, double-walled hood — excellent heat retention, on a spring-assisted lid system with a full-length handle.
  • 1/2" thick ceramic briquettes — sit beneath the grates and redistribute the flame, removing the hot spots most grills this size develop over the burner tubes.
  • Stainless steel cooking grates — durable and easy to clean.
  • 9V electronic ignition — wiring encapsulated in heat-resistant silicone, so startups stay reliable through years of outdoor exposure. No household power needed at the island.
  • Dual-position warming rack — lifts out of the way when you need the full grate surface.
  • Air curtain chimney design — keeps the control panel cool to the touch even with the lid closed.
  • Recessed control panel — keeps the knobs protected from the weather.
  • Built-in hood thermometer — accurate readings for oven-style roasting.
  • 304 stainless steel construction — throughout, made in the USA.

Model and Installation Information

This is model AAEP-36, ordered as AAEP-36-NG for natural gas or AAEP-36-LP for propane. The two builds are configured differently at the factory and are not interchangeable after purchase without a conversion, so treat the fuel decision as permanent and check the supply your island is plumbed for before ordering. If you are not certain, call us and we will work it out with you.

Plan the island for the cutout plus clearance. The opening is 34-1/2" wide by 19-3/4" deep by 9-1/2" high, and the head is 26-5/16" deep front to back. Confirm those figures against the AAEP-36 spec sheet, or call us and we will confirm them, before any masonry is poured or an existing opening is modified. An insulated jacket is required if the grill is going into an island built from any combustible material; that is a safety requirement, not an upgrade. Non-combustible islands built from block, masonry or a steel frame do not need one.

On the gas side, note that Artisan publishes the AAEP-36 under two ratings. The nominal 60,000 BTU burner rating is the one to give your gas fitter for sizing the supply line and regulator. The certified total rated input for the appliance is 56,400 BTU/hr, certified to ANSI Z21.58 / CSA 1.6, and the rating and orifice size for the individual grill you receive are printed on its serial plate, as Artisan's care and use manual specifies.

Who This Model Is Best For

Choose the AAEP-36 when you have island width to spend and want the largest American Eagle built-in surface. Three separately valved burners at 60,000 BTUs let you hold a searing zone and an indirect zone at once, and the extra width over the 32" head means those zones stay usable when the grill is full — the difference shows up when you are cooking for a crowd rather than a family of four. It suits a builder who wants Artisan's 304 stainless construction and everyday grilling range in a permanent island, and who has decided that a rotisserie and after-dark lighting are not worth stepping up to the Professional 36, which adds a 15,000 BTU rear infrared rotisserie burner, 110V ignition, halogen interior lighting and LED knobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What opening does the AAEP-36 need in my island?

Cut 34-1/2" wide by 19-3/4" deep by 9-1/2" high. The head is 26-5/16" deep front to back. Confirm the figures against the AAEP-36 spec sheet before any masonry goes in.

How much cooking power do the three burners give?

Three stainless steel U-burners produce 20,000 BTUs each, for 60,000 BTUs total spread across the 36" head. Fully adjustable brass valves run them, which gives usable low heat as well as full output.

Which model number do I order for my gas supply?

AAEP-36-NG is the natural gas build and AAEP-36-LP is the propane build. Check the supply your island is plumbed for before ordering.

Can I switch fuel types after I buy it?

Not without a conversion. The two builds are not interchangeable once purchased, so treat the fuel decision as permanent when you place the order.

Does my island need an insulated jacket?

Yes, if the island is built from any combustible material. That is a safety requirement, not an upgrade.

Islands built from block, masonry or a steel frame are non-combustible and do not need one. Allow for the cutout plus clearance either way.

What keeps the heat even instead of hot over the tubes?

Half-inch thick ceramic briquettes sit under the grates and redistribute the flame. That is what removes the hot spots most grills this size develop directly over the burner tubes.

How does it start, and does it need an outlet?

A 9V electronic ignition lights the burners, so no household power is required at the island. The wiring is encapsulated in heat-resistant silicone to keep startups reliable through years outdoors.

Is the lid heavy to open?

The hood is seamless, welded and double-walled, which is what holds heat, and a spring-assisted system carries that weight. A full-length handle spans the front.

Do the controls get hot while cooking?

Artisan's air curtain chimney design keeps the control panel cool to the touch even with the lid closed. The panel is recessed as well, which shields the knobs from weather.

Can I roast with the lid down?

Yes. A built-in hood thermometer gives accurate readings for oven-style roasting, and the dual-position warming rack lifts out of the way when you want the full grate surface.

How is this different from the Professional 36?

The American Eagle covers the same core cooking layout — three 20,000 BTU U-burners, ceramic briquettes, 304 stainless. The Professional 36 adds a 15,000 BTU rear infrared rotisserie burner, 110V ignition, halogen interior lighting and LED knobs.

If you will use a rotisserie or cook after dark regularly, the Professional earns the difference. If not, this one covers the same grilling.

What is the grill built from?

304 stainless steel throughout, made in the USA, with stainless cooking grates that clean up easily.
