Where a figure is not held in our catalogue we write "Not yet verified" rather than estimate one. The Atlas 36 is the model we point most buyers at because nothing in the list is obviously better at the same money. It is 304 stainless steel, its three U-tube burners are rated at 49,500 BTU, and it is engineered, fabricated and assembled in the USA. Its 34-inch cutout is a common opening size, and its 19¾-inch cutout depth is shallower than the American Made Grills Estate and Alturi series, which matters if your island is not deep. It is not the most powerful grill here and it does not include a rotisserie, but it is the one with the fewest compromises for the price.

Best Value: Coyote CL-Series 36" C3CL36 — $2,599

The C3CL36 is the cheapest way to get a genuine 36-inch built-in into an island. It is 304 stainless, it runs four burners rather than three, and Coyote includes the rotisserie kit — something the Atlas 36 and both AOG T-Series models do not. Its 32½-inch cutout is also the narrowest in the group, so it fits islands where a 36¾-inch AOG opening would not. You give up the U-tube burner design and the heavier construction of the American Made Grills line, but at $1,736 less than the Atlas that is a defensible trade.

Best Premium: American Made Grills Estate 36" EST36 — $8,335

The Estate 36 puts 93,000 BTU behind three burners — nearly twice the Atlas 36's output through the same burner count, which means much shorter recovery when you open the hood in cold weather. It uses the same 34¾-inch cutout as the Alturi 36 and Estate Freedom 36. Its overall width is 43.83 inches against a 34.75-inch cutout, so plan the counter run around the grill body, not the hole.

Best for charcoal cooks who do not want a gas line: Coyote 36" Charcoal C3CH36 — $2,729

The C3CH36 is a built-in charcoal grill with an adjustable charcoal tray, 304 stainless construction and the same 32½-inch cutout as the CL-Series 36. If your island has no gas run and you do not want to add one, this is the only 36-inch model here that solves the problem outright. It is also the sensible second grill in a larger island.

Best for low-and-slow cooking: Coyote Next-Gen 36" Pellet C2P36 — $3,999

The C2P36 holds a set temperature from 175°F to 700°F on a digital control, which no gas grill in this list will do unattended. Its cutout height is 16½ inches against 8½ to 11½ inches for the gas models, because the hopper sits below the counter — check that against your island before you commit. Model-by-model analysis

Coyote's three 36-inch gas grills sit close together and are easy to confuse. The CL-Series C3CL36 is $2,599 and the SL-Series C3SL36NG is $3,699 for a $1,100 difference. Both are four-burner 304 stainless grills with the rotisserie kit included. The SL-Series adds interior and exterior lighting and a spring-assisted hood. Note that our data records a 33½-inch cutout for the natural gas SL-36 and a 32½-inch cutout for the propane C3SL36LP; confirm the figure for your exact model against Coyote's installation manual before cutting. The AOG T-Series and L-Series are the same firebox at two price points. The T-Series AOG36TN at $3,351.60 is the cheapest 36-inch grill here that is engineered, fabricated and assembled in the USA. The L-Series AOG36LN at $4,775 adds the rear rotisserie burner, the rotisserie kit and lighting. Both need a 36¾-inch cutout — the widest opening of any grill on this page, and wider than the nominal 36 inches in the model name. If you are replacing an existing grill, that is the number that decides whether AOG is even a candidate.

American Made Grills scales cleanly from $4,335 to $10,158.72. The Atlas 36 at 49,500 BTU, the Estate Freedom 36 at 90,000 BTU for $5,890, the Alturi 36 at 78,000 BTU for $6,153.85 and the Estate 36 at 93,000 BTU for $8,335 all use three burners. The Estate Freedom 36 is the value pick within the line: it carries the same 90,000 BTU class output and the same 34¾-inch cutout as the Estate at $2,445 less. The Encore, Muscle and Ovation hybrids are the same 110,000 BTU five-burner gas, charcoal and wood firebox in three different exterior styles, at the same $10,158.72. Choose between them on looks, not performance. All three need a 35-inch by 15-inch cutout — that 15-inch height is far taller than the 8½ to 10¼ inches most gas grills need.

The sub-$3,000 group is where the specification data thins out. The Sunstone Ruby 36 RUBY4B at $2,860 and the Artisan American Eagle 36 at $2,959 are both 304 stainless, but we do not hold a verified cutout depth for either and we hold no cutout at all for the Artisan. That is a reason to call before ordering, not a reason to avoid them. The Artisan Professional 36 at $3,495 adds a rotisserie and steps up to 75,000 BTU per its product title.

The Alfresco ALXE-36 at $7,079 runs three Accufire burners under an EZ-Lift hood, and Alfresco grills are made and manufactured in the USA. We do not yet hold verified cutout figures for it, so treat the island opening as an open question until you have the current Alfresco installation manual in hand.

What actually matters when choosing a 36-inch built-in

The cutout, not the model name. Cutout widths across these twenty grills run from 32½ inches to 36¾ inches — a spread of more than four inches among grills that are all called "36 inch". Cutout heights run from 8½ inches to 16½ inches. If you are working with an existing island, start from the opening and work backwards. Whether the rotisserie is included. Coyote includes the rotisserie kit on the CL-Series and SL-Series. AOG includes it on the L-Series but not the T-Series. American Made Grills sells it separately on the Atlas, Alturi and Estate Freedom. That is a real few-hundred-dollar difference that does not show in the headline price.

Where it is built. Among the brands on this page, American Made Grills and American Outdoor Grills are engineered, fabricated and assembled in the USA; Alfresco is made and manufactured in the USA; and Artisan is built by its parent company Superior Equipment Solutions in City of Industry, California. Insulation, if the island is combustible. A grill dropped into a wood-framed or otherwise combustible island needs a manufacturer-specified insulating liner. Is a 36-inch grill big enough for a family?

Yes, for most households. Thirty-six inches gives you three to five burners depending on model, which is enough to run a hot zone and a holding zone at the same time. Step up to 42 inches only if you regularly cook for more than eight people.

Will a 36-inch grill fit a 36-inch opening?

Not necessarily. The AOG 36-inch models need a 36¾-inch cutout, which is wider than 36 inches. The Coyote CL-Series 36 needs only 32½ inches. Always work from the manufacturer's cutout figure, never from the model name.

Which 36-inch grill has the most burners?

The American Made Grills Encore 36, Muscle 36 and Ovation 36 hybrids each carry five burners at 110,000 BTU.

Do I need an insulating liner?

If the island is built from combustible material, yes, and it must be the liner specified for your exact grill model. Follow the manufacturer's installation manual and your local code, and use a licensed professional for gas work.
