What size opening do I build for the 28-inch charcoal grill?

The cutout is 27 1/2" wide, 22" deep and 12 3/4" high. Frame to those numbers and the grill body drops straight in.

Overall the unit measures 28" wide by 22" deep by 12 3/4" high, so the extra half inch of width sits on the counter and covers the edges of the opening.

Does this grill burn anything other than charcoal?

Charcoal only. Sunstone lists a single fuel type for the SUNCHSZ28, and there are no gas burners in this model.

How do you control heat without burner knobs?

Two ways: the charcoal burn tray is height-adjustable, and the vents are adjustable. Raising the tray brings the coals closer to the food for hard searing; lowering it backs the heat off.

How do you get the ash out?

The drawer system is fully removable. You pull the whole drawer out of the grill rather than scraping ash through the body.

Will it fit an island bay sized for a Sunstone gas grill?

The 27 1/2" cutout width and 22" cutout depth match what the Ruby 30" gas grill needs, so the width and depth of the bay carry over.

The height does not. This charcoal model wants 12 3/4" of cutout height against 10" for the Ruby 30, so confirm the vertical opening before you commit the framing.

How deep does my island counter need to be?

At least 22", since both the cutout depth and the overall depth of the grill are 22". Anything shallower will not take the body.
