Above $5,000, a built-in grill stops competing on burner count and starts competing on four things: multi-fuel capability, infrared sear or rotisserie systems, heavier construction, and where and how it is built. The best of them — the American Made Grills Ovation 54 at $12,760 and the Alfresco AIPG-42 at $11,999 — do something a $3,000 grill genuinely cannot. Several others in this price band mostly buy you styling, badge and dealer network. This page says which is which.

Every grill below is orderable and priced above $5,000. Figures are the manufacturer’s own published values as stored on each product page. Cooking-area figures are not comparable between brands — manufacturers include or exclude warming racks differently — so the column below reports each maker’s stated main grilling area only where that specific figure is published, and is left blank rather than filled with a number measured on a different basis.

Every American Made Grills and Alfresco model above is specified in 304 stainless steel. Confirm the exact cutout against the installation manual before any island is framed; our built-in grill cutout dimensions page lists the stored figures side by side.
This is the strongest argument for spending five figures. The American Made Grills hybrid lines — Muscle, Ovation and Encore — run gas, charcoal and wood in a single grill. So does the Sunstone Emerald 42, at roughly half the price. There is no cheap way to replicate that: a gas grill plus a separate charcoal grill costs island space you may not have, and switching fuels in one cutout is a real capability, not a marketing line.
The Alfresco ALXE 56 is specified with a sear zone, a rear infrared burner and an integrated side burner in one head. The ALXE 42 carries an infrared rotisserie and smoker system. These are separate burner assemblies with their own gas trains, and they are a large part of why an Alfresco costs what it does. If you actually rotisserie, they earn their keep. If you have never used a rotisserie, they will not start now because you spent $7,885.
Coastal South Carolina is hard on outdoor steel. Every AMG and Alfresco model listed is specified in 304 stainless. That matters more here than in a dry climate, and it is the least glamorous and most defensible reason to spend up.
American Made Grills manufactures in the USA. Alfresco states its grills are made and manufactured in the USA. Memphis is designed, engineered and tested in the USA. Those are three different claims and we do not blur them. Sunstone is not a US-manufacture claim we make. If domestic manufacture is your deciding factor, read best American-made built-in grills, where the distinctions are the whole subject.
Premium lines generally carry longer component coverage than value lines, but terms differ by brand, by component and by year, and they change. We will not print a duration we cannot source. Ask us for the current warranty document for the specific model before you order, or start from our warranty information page.
Some of this price band is aesthetics and brand, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
A $3,000 grill sears steak nearly as well as a $9,000 one. Direct radiant heat off a hot grate is not a difficult engineering problem in 2026. A TrueFlame 40" TF40 at $3,499 with 5 burners and 80,000 BTUs will put a better crust on a ribeye than most people can tell apart from a $10,000 head in a blind test. The premium grill will do it more evenly across the surface, recover faster between loads, and look better doing it — but the steak is not four times better.
Burner count above five is mostly zone control, not power you will use. The eight burners on a 54-inch hybrid exist because the surface is 54 inches wide, not because a home cook needs 176,000 BTUs. If you cook for four, a 36-inch head is the right grill and the 54 is furniture.
Handles, hood profiles, knob lighting and logo plates are styling. They are why an outdoor kitchen looks finished, and they are a legitimate thing to buy — just call it what it is.
Watch the value cliff inside a single brand. The Estate Freedom 36 at $5,890 and the Estate 36 at $8,335 are both AMG 36-inch heads in 304 stainless with the same 34.75" cutout. The gap is $2,445. Make sure you know exactly which features you are buying before you cross it.
Six burners, 132,000 BTUs, gas, charcoal and wood in a 40.875" cutout. It is the point where hybrid capability, size and US manufacture all land in one head without stepping up to a 54-inch island. See the Ovation 42.
Gas, charcoal and wood with 770 square inches of main grilling area for roughly half the price of the AMG hybrids, in a 39.5" cutout. It is not a US-manufacture story and its 35,000 BTU main burner output is modest against the AMG figures, but no other grill we stock delivers multi-fuel at this price. See the Emerald 42.
Sear zone, rear infrared burner and side burner integrated in one 3-burner head, made and manufactured in the USA. Buy it if you will use all three systems. See the ALXE 56.
Three burners, 78,000 BTUs, 660 square inches of main grilling area, 304 stainless, 34.75" cutout — the cheapest way into American Made Grills’ premium tier. Compare it against the rest of the size class on best 36-inch built-in grills.
A built-in pellet grill with Wi-Fi control and a 24 lb hopper, designed, engineered and tested in the USA. It is a different machine from everything else here: low-and-slow first, sear second. Note the 42.625" cutout width — wider than the 39" model name suggests. More context in the pellet grills FAQs.
The cutout outlives the grill. A 53.25" opening for an Ovation 54 commits your island for decades. Check the number against the manual before framing.
Budget the insulating liner with the grill. Liners for the hybrid heads run over $1,000. Whether one is required is decided by the installation manual and local code, not by us — see do you need an insulating grill liner and browse grill liners.
Gas type is fixed at order. Natural gas and propane models are built differently.
Match the grill to the whole island, not the other way round. A $12,000 grill in a kitchen with no cold storage and no counter run is a poor use of the budget. See what an outdoor kitchen costs and the outdoor kitchen appliance checklist.
No. It is usually larger, better finished, and capable of something the cheaper grill cannot do at all — typically charcoal and wood, or a dedicated infrared system. On plain gas grilling of a steak, the difference is real but small.
The Alfresco ALXE 30 at $5,169. If $5,000 is your ceiling rather than your floor, best built-in grills under $5,000 and built-in grills $3,500–$5,000 are the right places to look.
American Made Grills manufactures in the USA, and Alfresco states its grills are made and manufactured in the USA. Memphis is designed, engineered and tested in the USA. We do not make US-manufacture claims for the other brands on this page.
More burners mean more independent zones across a wider surface. On a 36-inch head, three well-designed burners are plenty.

If you will genuinely cook over charcoal or wood, buy a hybrid: the AMG Ovation 42 if the budget allows, the Sunstone Emerald 42 if it does not. If you will only ever cook on gas, stop at the Alturi 36 or Alturi 42 and put the saved money into refrigeration, storage and countertop — you will notice that difference every week, and you will not notice the burner upgrade.
And if you are honest with yourself and the answer is "I grill burgers and chicken on weekends", a good grill under $5,000 will serve you completely. We sell those too, and we would rather you were happy than overspent.
